Potential Employers Checking Credit

Does anyone have a sense of how common this is, or if it is more common to some industries? I know they must have permission before they perform a check, but I never hear about it actually happening. Any information? And, when it does happen, how often is an adverse action taken (dismissal or withdrawal of job offer?) Thanks for info! I'm thinking of changing jobs, but am a little nervous about this aspect as my credit isn't the greatest right now (but getting better -- up 31 pts in 5 weeks thanks to all of you!). My current employer would NEVER do such a thing.

Re: Potential Employers Checking Credit

I am an attorney. I've never heard of it in my field, but I've never really had to worry. My credit has taken a recent dip (last 4-5 months) due to some personal situations, but I am on the mend and scores should be in the mid-600s within 6 months.

My sister works for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and they ran a check on her.  She was upfront with them due to her bk and she got the job anyway.

Banking industry for sure (Officer and above--maybe others). I also applied for a franchise last year and was denied due to credit. That was when I realized that I must get my credit in order.

This article was posted in the Credit In The News forum, some months back. An interesting read:

Insurance companies, and I would think anywhere that you would be handling other peoples' money,,,not grocery-store clerking, but where you are privy to private information, security, things like that...

When you apply for bar admission, in the "character" section they used to ask if you have filed for BK.  Now they also ask if you have defaulted on an account 3 times, or been 90 days late, or something like that.  I don't know if they check CRs but the issue of having good credit is on the radar screen of the bar admissions people.

Re: Potential Employers Checking Credit

Yes, when I did my character and fitness, I had to submit a credit report. At the time (3 years ago), I had a 700 score. As far as the bar goes, they don't care if you've had bad credit in the past or even present, as long as you can convince them that you are doing something about it....perhaps law firms don't check because they know you've had to do it for your bar admission. That would be GOOD for me....Smiley Happy
