Question on Inquiries

Forum Friends,

I have several inquiries on my CR and I think 2 or 3 were from companies I never authorized to pull a hard inquiry (on a soft).  I just pulled my credit report online through myFICO, and it gives me an opportunity to use their "dispute letter" feature to dispute these inquiries.

My question is:  Has anyone used this dispute letter feature to dispute an inquiry, and if so was it successful?

I am wondering what the best method to remove these items would be.

Thank you!

Re: Question on Inquiries

I  used one of their premade dispute letters for a CA that wasn't mine, and got it taken off, so I guess yes, they work.

Re: Question on Inquiries

If you are absolute that you don't have any accounts with the companies and did not apply for credit, use I think you should use the non-authorized INQ letter instead of that form.  http://ficoforums.myfico.com/fico/board/message?board.id=generalcredit&thread.id=3900

Yes, both letters work but this one is better by far IMHO.

If any are sustained and you later realize you have an account with them you can ask them to recode it to a soft if it was in error that they did a hard pull.   Search the forum for threads related to hard recode.  And here is another thread which I found very informative.

Re: Question on Inquiries

Thank you for the replies.  SmartCookie, your reply brings up another good question.  I have several recent inquiries for new credit (Hooters, Juniper, AMEX, and WaMu), which I received a CC for each.

Will any of these companies be willing to recode their pulls to soft from a hard one?  If so, please tell me how to go about requesting this.

Thanks!

I always say anything is possible, but I would save the stamp.  If you apply for new credit, a hard INQ is standard.  The one exception to this would be if you apply for a CC or other type account with a company you already have (not had) one with... they MIGHT only pull a soft INQ.  If this was the situation with any and it was a hard pull I would certainly take the time to nicely ask if they would classify it as an account review and recode to a soft INQ.
