Really confused about what to do with this debt - Please help!

First, I'm so glad I found this website, my husband and I feel now we can get our credit on track.

Here's the deal.  We had a car repossessed in a bankruptcy and I'm assuming they sold the car and are charging us the difference.  It's about $5,000.  It's is showing on our report as not paid as of 2003, that's the reported date.   SOL in my state is 4 years.  So I called the company because I really didn't know if it was included the bankruptcy or not.  Well the company with the debt (Conseco Finance) has gone bankrupt and was sold to this new company I was talking to.  She said she couldn't pull up anything, had no information on my account, and that I should dispute with the credit agency.

My question is is this what I do and how would I go about this?  Since the company is no longer and I'm past my SOL, what do we do?  Are we obligated to pay this?

I would post this on the bankruptcy board too but it seems more busy around here.

Thank you!

Any other thoughts on this?  It's a joint account with my husband.  Didn't know if I should DV first, or just dispute straight with the CA as not mine....??

Do you have any other collection or charge offs on either of your accounts since BK?

Yep, we have other accounts that show up as CO, and a few collections that should have been included in the BK and wasn't.  I've sent DV letters to two collection agencies and waiting for a response but since this company has gone Bankrupt, just didn't know how to proceed.  I think we had a bad lawyer too since things weren't included that should have been.

IMO before you start trying to Dispute, Get all CR directly from all CRA's , go completely through them and make sure all Personal INFO is correct and up to date. Have them delete any old addresses, phone numbers , Name Variations, and any other personal INFO that is not correct.

If you delete old IFO it makes it more difficult for old accts to be verified with CRA's

Also I would OPT-OUT at this web address www.OptOutPrescreen.com

After everything is updated, I wuold dispute any inaccurate IFO with CRA 1st.

If they come back as verified , then DV any CA listed as verifying on CR.

Thanks for your help!  One question (or two), how do I go about getting old Info deleted? Online with the CRA?  Or do I call them?
And what about inquiries, I see where one company did like 8 different inquiries and I don't know why.  How do we get those deleted?

Re: Really confused about what to do with this debt - Please help!

If you have current reports you can dispute personal info online, but if you have had a change of address you will have to do it via mail. Send copy of DL, SS card , and current utility bill. They will update no problem. EQ and TU are good about removing old addresses , but EX is harder to work with, especially if address listings are assoc with accounts in your CR.  Just call them and try though.

Inquires are much more difficult. If you don't recognize the companies that pulled them , try writing letters to them and ask them to verify as to what permissable purpose they had to pull your CR, and if they can't provide it, ask them to delete inquiries with CRA's. CRA's will only delete if requested by company that placed inquiry.

Gator - should my credit report only include my current address? I mean is that ideal?  I'm in the military and move around a lot so my report has quite a few old addresses.  Thoughts on this?  Thanks again!
