Removing things from credit score

Hi everyone! I have a bunch of closed, $0 balance collections accounts on my score. How do I get them removed from my score?! Thank you!

Re: Removing things from credit score

Im not sure that’s an option outside of GW (goodwill) letters. Some folks have been able to email/write those agencies and ask them to remove them because of a variety of reasons (impacting my ability to buy a home, car, whatever your situation is) and sometimes they’ll do it.

Most people have success doing it when they are negotiating the final payment .. “if I pay you off will you delete it” (lovingly known and PFD - pay for delete).

It may also work against you because also they are negative (type of account), they are paid off and still counting towards your average age of accounts so removing them might reduce you age depending on how old they are. I had a couple removed several years ago and my scores took a dip for it, but most (including myself) prefer the lower “clean” report/score over the age/dirty file.

Hopefully someone might chime in with a few tips to get you going

Welcome To the forum.

CiC is right on point. That’s why you don’t simply pay off collections, you negotiate a pay for delete when you pay them off.

Otherwise they have no incentive to remove the tradeline from your report. At this point all you can do is beg via goodwill letter and I wish you the best of luck.

Maybe somebody else knows something they can chime in with but I don’t know of any other way other than waiting for seven years for them to drop off.

Re: Removing things from credit score

A collection can become closed with a zero balance remaining under active collection in one of two ways.

First, if the debt is paid, or second, if the debt remains unpaid but the debt collector has had their collection authority terminated.

If the debt is paid, then CRA policy instructs the debt collector to promptly update the collection to show paid, $0 balance, but explicitly instructs the debt collector NOT to delete the collection.  They should remain until they reach the required exclusion date of no later than 7 years plus 180 days from the DOFD.

However, in the case of a reported collection in which the debt remains unpaid and the debt collector has had their collection authority terminated for some reason, while they are required to promptly update the collection to show closed, $0 balance, CRA policy additionally instucts that they delete their reported collection.

Were your reporting collections updated to closed with $0 balance because they were paid, or was the debt unpaid and the debt collector updated due to termination of their collection authority?

Not to nit pick, but really to nit pick.

You want them removed from your Credit Report.   The information on your Credit Report affects your Credit Score.   Your credit score is a numerical representation of the likelyhood of you defaulting on a debt based upon information in your Credit report.
