SCAM COLLECTION???

I received a collection notice in the mail from a company in texas that said that I owed $77.00 to BMG Records.  I haven't done any business with BMG in many years and dont recall having left an open balance.  I called the collection company and a guy that I could hardly understand beacuse of his heavy hispanic accent and broken english told me that according to his records that I owed this amount from 1997 and that he would accept half as payment in full.  I needed to send him a check in the mail and it would all be settled.  I told him that I would need proof because I had no recollection of this unpaid balance.  He said that he couldnt send me anything but needed me to settle before it was reported to my Credit Bureaus.  That was 3 months ago.  I never sent any money in and it never showed up on my CR's at all in the apst 10 years!  What was that all about??

Re: SCAM COLLECTION???

The notice could have been intended for someone else. I remember I got an "account" with BMG when I was 15 or 16 so they are not difficult to get.

Re: SCAM COLLECTION???

Whatever you do, don't pay it.  Also, I don't believe  they have your social security number to put it on your credit report.  If they ask you to verify your social, don't do it.  I would tell them to drop dead!

Re: SCAM COLLECTION???

I got calls from these people for quite a while.  I never answered the phone and they never left messages, I just know from googling the phone number.  Eventually they sent a letter threatening collections to me.  I sent a DV to them and they went away.   I found out from googling the number that whoever these people are, they apparently bought a bunch of EXTREMELY old BMG accounts and are now trying to collect whatever they can.  They shouldn't be able to legally add a collection to your report since it is probably way outside the amount of time they can report, however, that never stopped a CA.   Ignore the calls, but if they send you anything in writing, DV it immediately.
