Someone used my debit card for a large purchase!

This post has me shook

I am trying to open a high interest bank account that requires several debit transactions per months. Now I am more apprehensive.

Re: This post has me shook

I wouldn't let this scenario deter you, a debit card is still safe and secure to use in most cases. A person just needs to be self aware of one's surroundings when using it. Nothing is going to be 100%, but you can't burry head in the sand. lol

I still use my debit at certain locales 12 times monthly due to my accounts requirements. Never had this type of problem with it, in fact it's been denied a couple times on larger purchases due to possible fraud. While inconvenient at the time, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Plus I never carry just one form of payment, so no biggie.

Re: This post has me shook

Sorry but I disagree with you about continuing to recommend use of a debit card. The simple truth is if this was a credit card, it would have already been taken care of. Credit cards and debit cards have completely different levels of protection. A debit card is treated same as cash and in my opinion it’s foolish to use them if you don’t have to.

My bank sent me a new debit card and I went right in the app and froze it. I have NFCU and DCU frozen as well. It’s not worth the risk of someone getting access to my funds and tying them up for a long time (or losing them altogether which does happen) when I could have used a credit card or just gotten cash, especially when my Discover card will let me buy a pack of gum and take $20-$60 in Cash Over at the same time with none of the risk.

Those “swipe your debit card x amount of times per month” rewards checking accounts are something I won’t ever bother myself with as long as debit transactions can be done with a signature.

If you freeze your debit card will it still work at the ATM?

Purchases and ATM withdrawals are both stopped.

The apps let you thaw them in real-time though so if you need to use the card, you can just turn it off and hit the ATM.

Depending on the account, I think these can be done fairly safely.   I have four (well, two belong to my wife) and early on each month I just do 36 Amazon reloads of fifty-something cents (each account needs either 8 or 10 debit transactions).    So the debit cards never leavethe house (and don't get used at all).   Some accounts require "real" usage and that can be more problematic.

Re: This post has me shook

Wow!  Op, so sorry for your troubles. Upon clean up, I hope you consider a new financial institution.

Years ago I had a similar, all be it much smaller $ amount, situation with some electronics purchased for a little less than $4k. Wachovia, our bank at the time, made it right within 24 hours.

I had always been under the impression a swipe without entering a pin#, thus subject to network fees, was under the fraud protection for that network.

Again, OP, really hate this for you, but thanks for sharing your experience and allowing us to all learn from it.

Re: This post has me shook

UPDATE:

Bank is REALLLLLY being hard on this, won’t get back to me, HAS 0 updates 14 DAYS LATER.

Today I contacted them and got this response; “as of right now, I do not see any updates. Call us later to see any updates”.

My response; so to be correct there is 0 updates that have happened yet after 14 days....

Rep: that is correct.

..... ehhhhhhh guys stay away from the smaller CU’s I have $25k in CL with this Bank, they’ve lost my business for good... AS SOON AS I GET THIS RESOLVED.

Not sure what I can do?. No adjustment credit even... no update in 14 days, nothing..
is this violating my chargeback / fraud rights?.

It’s horrible that I’ve had to contact the merchant to update me... as the bank card services rep that is handling my case has not called me other then when I reported it, and sent them the police report...

Forgive me if I am being obtuse. Have you contacted the Visa or Mastercard network? There was never any mention of a PIN# being entered. The initial liability, low as it may be , is on the network. Am I wrong, community?

This cannot be allowed. They are pushing us to a cashless society based upon their networks. They have to be on the hook for fraudulent activity, don't they?

OP, wait on resolution, then dump that POS bank!

You're correct. If it was ran as credit, they may have protections in place for zero liability on fraudulant purchases. Who to contact, I don't know. But, contacting the networks could nudge the bank to move quicker.

OP: you could contact a consumer protection attorney. They normally deal with creditors, but I'm sure something like this could fall under what they practice. A consultation should be free in almost all cases.
