True victim of Identity Theft!! Help!!

Long story..... well, in 2013- 2017 I was traveling for work around the country. During that time, I took my nephew in to help him get his life in order and I felt that he needed as much family as possible. Towards the end of 2018 I noticed that things started missing around the home. Now, I allowed him to work for me and earn a nice income, so I know that he had money. Well, my children started to bring to my attention that their things were missing. Being the loving and naive aunt that I am, I refused to believe that my nephew that I was raising was stealing from me and definitely not my kids. Now things started to make sense and I moved him out and he moved in with my grandparents, his great grandparents. Now I start to see the mail coming in and all of the things that he was purchasing in my name. So now I'm in repair mode and only 1 nasty company will not work with me DISCOVER. So, so.e would say, report my nephew to the police. Well, ended up going to prison for stealing and passing from a drug overdose. So, what good would that do at this point. I found out that Discover sued me and I had no idea. Never saw 1 bill from them as I was away literally 2-3 weeks out of the month. My assistant nor my nanny at the time ever handed me 1 credit card bill. He did the whole thing on line. Now I'm stuck trying to figure out what to do with Discover. They want blood or my first born. PLEASE HELP.

Discover is Ruining me

After being a victim of identity theft by my nephew, Discover is really not will to work with me. They just reported the account as charged off and it literally dropped my score 122 points in 1 day. I am devastated as my husband and I are trying to build a new home. I had no clue that all of this was happening. I was able to get everything else fixed but Discover is fighting tooth and nail. I dont know what to do. They sent me statements in the mail to prove what? I said it's not mine. I didnt charge the card. Not sure what to do now.

Re: Discover is Ruining me

Did you fill out police report?

If so, you should be fine if you prosecute.

If not, the debt is yours.

Did you not make the minimum payments?

Rebuild started in 2014  -  $100k unsecured credit in 2017  -  $500k unsecured credit in 2024.

Re: Discover is Ruining me

First thing you should do ASAP is file a POLICE report and send report to Discover.  You should  not be responsible  for debt bcuz you did not open the account.  This is identity  theft and fraud!

Re: Discover is Ruining me

He passed away in prison of a drug overdose. There's no one to prosecute.

...and therefore, there is no one to offend by filing a police report.

Your options are to dispute this debt that isn't yours, or pay it.

In order to dispute it, the lender may require a police report.

It is absolutely your call, and I'm terribly sorry that this happened to you...  I would file the police report.

Good luck!

I suggest taking ownership of your part in this problem.

You invited a troubled youth into your home. You allowed access to your financial information. You turned a blind eye when warning signs were present.

It is unfortunate your nephew victimized you. It is not unfortunate Discover wants their money. They are victims here too. Apparently the picture has yet to be painted clearly enough for them that you are not the one trying to victimize them. Based on what you've written, that seems a reasonable position.

The sooner you own this problem, the sooner you can commence getting it resolved. I wish you well.
