Hey everyone o/
Been looking at my climbing credit scores and I keep thinking about an Amex card just to have business with them. Eventually I will probably wind up getting the BCP, after my CSR bonus is achieved. I won't be getting the Gold though, anymore, which used to be one of my desired cards. However, this thread isn't about me, but rather how the community thinks American Express has handled the whole pandemic.
Do you believe that American Express still offers a good value? Who are Amex's primary target customers? Have they been less, more or about as flexible as other credit issuers in terms of benefits and rewards during a period where traveling is less common, dare I say even taboo and staying in is more common? Are their rewards, fees and services up to par for what we are currently experiencing?
Future looking, do you think American Express will bend to the needs of the customer? Undoubtedly, the pandemic has changed how people conduct their day, and I am interested to hear what you guys think of them in 2021.
Thanks

I have several Amex cards that I rarely use and all I can tell you is that they have gone up on the AF for the Plat card during the pandemic.
I can only speak to my experience with the Gold card, but during the pandemic they have made adjustments to the credits. They have added a $120 Uber/Uber Eats credit redeemable as $10 monthly. Between that and the $120 ($10/month) dining credit, it almost wipes out the AF. Since I had the card prior to the pandemic, I also have the $100 airline credit, but that is not available to new applicants, and ends this year. Not sure if I'll be using it this year, but if so, I would have a negative annual fee.
I've been able to make more use of the charge card credits during Covid, and even some of the offers like the Instacart reimbursement. The credits on Platinum made it worth getting (10x on gas and groceries), so I've been happy with them through it all.
They put a spending limit on my gold for using the POT plan they offered, citing I wasn't paying the balance down fast enough. Even though they advertise paying at your speed. And I'm making the payments required. And PIF any additional charges I make.
I still like my AMEX Platinum for travel. They customer service is still outstanding, IMHO. Also, they are great for credit building in the sense of increasing overall credit limits and lowering utlilization. If you play nice, their CLIs are predictable and your limits can grow fast.
