IANAL but...! While it certainly seems wrong and not worth it for $200, I wouldn't be so quick as to say it's actually illegal. The OP isn't asking for additional credit via this, so none of the obtaining credit by deception stuff really comes in. He/she is trying to get an extra reward from the CCC, which is where the danger of shutdown etc comes, but "illegal"? I'll defer to a real lawyer though

Providing knowingly false info for credit purposes is fraud.
That is a crime.
Even providing an inflated income is fraud.
They may not charge the person with a crime but.. There's a post around here where somebody got their card(s) shut down for fake AUs.

What about the SSN, how would the AU be added without a legitimate SSN? No challenge to your statement here, just inquisitive

As OP said, SSN is not required in this case for AU. You can often add someone without supplying an SSN: presumably the issuer then tries to find a match, such as someone at that address (which would be the problem in this case).

Yes, inflated income is fraud because you are trying to get credit that you aren't "entitled" to. With an AU, no additional credit is being sought, the account holder has all the responsibility.

From the OP post.
"The thing is I don't have any one else living under my roof and don't trust someone else. Is it a crime/illegal if I make up an authorized user or a varation of my name? For example if my name is John Doe, can I make up authorized user by the name Johnny Doe?"
Make up a phoney name is deception for the OP's financial gain. There are many types of fraud. The main thing is actions like this makes us honest CC holders have to pay for all the tricks people play. Look at how some CCC's are cracking down on SUB's, approval guidlines and such now. Mostly its just flat out lying.
Side note: I thought this would fall under TOS rules here. We cant discuss gaming the CRA's for approvals. Deception should fall into the same catagory. Sorry dont want to be a jerk. But its not moral. Its not right. In the end we have to suffer with the newer crack down for cards many want and its getting harder to get. Of course JMHO.
Whether making up a name to be an AU is illegal is not be decided here. However, it clearly is unethical to do so and therefore a violation of MyFICO's Forums Terms of Service for this to be discussed here. Therefore, this thread is now closed as the ToS specifically prohibits:
