Re: prisoner of my own mistakes

You said at the very beginning of the post that you couldn't even get a Macys, something about waiting for a letter.  If you were denied a credit card, you are entitled to a free report.  When the letter comes, it will state that (I think this is everywhere, not just California?) and how to get it.  If you did not apply, you might just think about applying somewhere, for a minor card, and see what happens.

Re: prisoner of my own mistakes

This is whats so confusing, I don't understand why getting a copy of my report is so confusing? How can Fico not give me one but these other places can?

Re: prisoner of my own mistakes

It is my understanding that Macy's will have to tell you why...they had to have something to base their decision on - ask for that.

One time I tried to get my free reports and one of them had some weird message, not the same as yours, but in effect they couldn't get me a report.  Week or so later, tried again and it worked.  It may just be a fluke in the program?  Macy's somehow got your report...unless they are denying because they couldn't get anything?

Re: prisoner of my own mistakes

1. your not getting any info from MyFico cause you have almost no credit history. I ran into a similar problem in getting info from TU through MyFico cause there had been no activity with them in over 3 years.

2. the BIGGEST thing that is effecting your scores most likely is the fact you have almost no credit history.

I hope you bought somethin hella good in the first 2 months you had that card! ha!

Nothing could be worth this kind of hassle ;c) You said you had a similar problem, what was your course of action?

Re: prisoner of my own mistakes

I would definitely agree with many of the responses detailing the credit card approach, but I would also venture to recommend going to Beneficial or American General and obtaining a loan of around $1,000.  They are high-risk lenders, so you'll more than likely get it.  And put half of it in a savings account and use the rest to buy whatever, and pay it off in a few months.  Lather, rinse, repeat.  I did this with my credit union and now have confirmation they'll approve me for a $5,000 personal loan...which isn't amazing, but for a 19 year old, that's pretty darn good!

Re: prisoner of my own mistakes

I would be carefull on this one....I did the same thing with Citifinancial thinking it would help, and it shows up as a baddie on one of my credit reports, something to the effect that personal finance loans indicate you are a higher risk because of searchiing for credit....how about a secured card?

Re: prisoner of my own mistakes

You'd have to act fast, but you should see if your parents would be willing to add you as an Authorized User on their credit cards. If they do this now, then by the end of the year the new cards might be reporting (and therefore giving you some credit history). That should be enough to get a couple cards on your own, before the Authorized User status goes away.

I agree about the consumer finance loan. (I don't agree that FICO ought to score them down --grr!) Avoid one if you possibly can. But you do need to get something going in credit land, so that a credit report can be generated. Try the AU method if a family member agrees (do NOT pay money for AU!), try for a secured card from BofA (give them $500, they give you a card with a $500 CL, do around 9 months of absolutely perfect payment history, graduate to the real thing), go to a credit union and talk to them.

You just need to get something current on your credit history.
