Re: Hard pull from DIRECT TV (utility company) Help!

If I were you, I would send a letter asking them to recode as a soft. Also, I would contact the BBB and alert them of this practice. If you search "hard pull direct tv", you will likely find a lot of posts about it and what members did to rectify the problem. If they don't respond to the letter, send an ITS letter.

Re: Hard pull from DIRECT TV (utility company) Help!

The spouse and I just recently switched to Direct TV(if they ever show up, been waiting since 8am yesterday but that is a different rant) and the spouse is the one that called in.

They specifically said "we are going to pull your credit report". Now, we didn't inquire as to whether it would be a soft or hard, as we figured it would be a hard.

I have my doubts on whether their CSR know the difference in hard/soft. Maybe they think since they don't actually see your entire report on their screen, just a simple approve/deny, that it is a soft. Who knows.

But, as ByrdMan mentioned, there are many posts about this and members who were told it would be a soft hit.

Sidewinder, I agree with you about the CSRs probably not knowing the difference, but I would bet you that the muckety-mucks know the difference, and with enough complaints to the same, should disseminate the information. Training on something like this should not be difficult.

You wouldn't think.

It should look something like this:

Email from Muckety-mucks to all peons:

From now on please inform potential customers that they will incur a hard inquiry on their credit report.

Wow, very difficult indeed.

I was inquiring about service for a utility company Direct TV, and did not even wind up getting the service. Anyway, they told me it would be a soft pull, and low and behold there is an inquiry on my report from them.

When I decided to get DirecTV via their website, the website SPECIFICALLY said that they would check my credit.  Since my credit reports are frozen, I decided to pay a $300 deposit (it's an option on their website when signing up for new service) and not to have DirecTV check my credit report.

Long story short, during the ordering process, DirecTV did NOT pull any of my reports, however after the installation of my equipment, DirecTV did pull a SOFT INQ.

In any case, I don't know if you'll have any luck concerning your INQ because as I said before, on DirecTV's website, it specifically says they WILL check your credit reports.

Good luck

What if you don't go to their website? What if you just call them up, because of a television advert or a val-pak insert or something? I would escalate this thing until I got full satisfaction of what I wanted--INQ recoded.

I didn't know that was possible with a frozen account.  How did they get around that?

First, soft INQs do NOT show up when creditors or lenders pull or review your credit.  Thus, they don't hurt your score.

Second, sorry for your frustrations, but one should always assume that your credit report(s) will be pulled when you are opening any type of account: cable, satellite, natural gas, telephone, cellphone, checking, savings, credit cards, lights, and the list goes on.

You have to keep in mind that the average person on the streets is not keenly aware of how inquiries affect their credit which is probably why it is not standard policy to inform people that your credit will be checked either prior to or after opening some type of account.

It is one of the reasons that some people, including myself, keep their credit reports LOCKED/FROZEN just to make the process a bit more difficult for them. And to be in the loop BEFORE the report is pulled and not find out about the INQ afterwards.

Good luck

True, but they are supposed to tell you they are checking your credit.
