Blocked by Langley

I joined Langley FCU through a referral from a MyFICO member on 12/9/2019 by opening a Savings account and depositing a few hundred bucks.  Then on 1/24/20 I decided to accept their offer for a Platinum Select Visa with a $10,300 starting limit.  When the rep called later to finalize the credit card I asked for the starting limit to be raised to $15,000 (because, why not?) and he told me the app had to be sent back to underwriting for them to sign-off. (see this thread where I mentioned the approval).

After that phone call, I heard nothing from Langley for about a month.  Just as I was about to call I got a letter in the mail stating that they had cancelled my credit card application because they couldn't verify my identity. This was a first for me as my credit history dates back to the mid-80's and no previous bank had ever had problems verifying my identity).  Anyway, I just let it slide but continued to monitor my savings account although I didn't use it.

Then in late March I attempted to transfer a significant amount of money and the transfer was returned to the originating bank.  I then started noticing that while I could log in to their website, the savings account no longer showed up.  After about two weeks of that I sent them a secure message asking why my account no longer appeared when I logged in but they never replied.  But a few days after my secure message I noticed I was entirely blocked from accessing their system.  Every time I attempted to log in I got this screen:

Well, yesterday afternoon I finally got around to calling their Contact Center and after a considerable wait I was able to speak with a representative.  After exchanging pleasantries I explained why I was calling and she started to investigate.  Suddenly she asked me where I was, and I replied that I was at my home in Wisconsin.  She then asked if I was near my phone to which I said yes, and she texted me a numeric code that I had to read back to her. After that she told me that they wanted me to bring my social security card and identification documents to a local branch in south-east Virginia or they will "have to close my account" because Langley is "primarily intended to serve residents of south-east Virginia." (her exact words).

After hearing her out I told her to close the account immediately and mail a check to me because there was no way I was getting on a plane and traveling to southern Virginia for a credit union account.  Initially I was not going to discus this but then I remembered I had mentioned the credit card approval, and the similarity to my BECU experience which occurred during the same time period.

Re: Blocked by Langley

Dang, sorry to hear about the ordeal illegitimate father.

I guess we are both illegitimate to a couple of these credit unions!!😂

I've had several fraud department heads tell me that the fraud has skyrocketed lately.

What makes no sense, they allow the account to be opened and money to be deposited 😡.

Then decide to lock people out.

Lock me out before I deposit money in your bank or credit union.😆

I guess we are more closely related than I previously thought!😂

Hey son Smiley Happy

I guess I'm not surprised to hear about the rampant fraud.  But in this case Langley never even bothered to contact me.  Oh well, its their loss.

Now I'm glad I didn't try AOD, with my run of bad luck with credit unions it would have been denied too...especially after they saw my selfie. Smiley Happy

The big banks are happy to take my money though.   I opened a Virtual Wallet account with PNC last month (ugh, but I'm working them for a credit product later) and a Saving account with Bank of America yesterday with absolutely no problems.

Re: Blocked by Langley

I believe you would have been a shoe in at AOD! And I believe you still would be. Not sure if they clamped down on the geo fencing or not.

You'd been an easy $25k approval with AOD.

Congratulations on the other banking accounts.

Yeah that's what rubbed me the wrong way about Langley. They didn't bother to contact me about a loan app and or my question/response months ago.

I'll be closing them out shortly.

In the last two months I've closed.

Alliant

SDFCU

First Tech

Consumers credit union

Andrews FCU

Langley is next up on the chopping block.

If I don't feel they are proactive with members...they got to go.

I just replace them with others.

Re: Blocked by Langley

I'll probably try AOD down the road...I've had at least 4 hits to my ChexSystems/EWS reports since December so its probably time to cool it for a while.  Plus I'm not sure I need another credit card except for the thrill of the chase.

Although I don't have as many CU memberships as you do, I have a lot of bank accounts and I'm trying to reduce the number before they become unmanageable.  I just got a letter from Navy stating they will deactivate my debit card if I dont use it in the next 60 days. Since I don't ever use debit cards they will eventually close it but its things like that and having to make sure I show activity in certain accounts that has me rethinking the number of bank accounts I have.

I didn't have a problem with Alliant but  haven't really had contact since closing out my SSL when I got a new car loan.  My issue with them is their low APR on Savings which they just reduced again to 0.90%.

Re: Blocked by Langley

Not misising anything with Langley imho.  Many other better CU's out there.  They make no sense it is like they don't want some people.  Alot of us can't get in for their lending products despite high ficos, incomes, etc.  Every CU has something they are searching for just like PenFed in which some people have issues with getting a card with Langley causes other issues including myself and many other "bigger" hititers.  When one door closes another one opens.  I closed my membership a few weeks back as despite 800+ scores couldnt get a credit product so what is the purpose of them having my money as they were the only one that benefited..

I also think you would be a shoe in with AOD if you choose.

@CreditCuriosity I didn't realize other people had problems with Langley... all I see are the positive reports.

Re: Blocked by Langley

Genuinely curious why the need for so many credit unions?  Only so many financial needs to spread around and I know some of those on the list aren't exactly setting the world on fire and never have.

I do know big banks seemingly have tightened too, Chase refused to send me a replacement card recently (I really have no idea where I left my CSR, lost in the moves or something but at least it's an easy one to just claim as lost and haven't needed to swipe it in months with DoorDash and grubhub anyway) and was astonishingly slow at changing my mailing address on my checking account but oddly not on my credit cards.

We'll see but I will be glad when things go back to normal everywhere including the financial markets.

@CreditCuriosity

Yeah for sure on the lot of credit part! lol

Funny thing, with one of the CUs I joined recently. The LO praised me on my credit report. She was blown away!

100% manual review by her and the UW. No issues being approved for a CC with them. And they are what I consider ultra conservative.

I feel bad for those that think all CU's or Banks are the same. That is as far from the truth as it gets. Not one operates like the others.

Some work for certain individuals, while some may not.

@Anonymous

Yeah I understand, I've also closed several bank accounts as well. And still have a bunch of those opened all over the place.lol

I set up small transfers to keep the bearings lubed. Those transfers are indefinite. Some go one way. While others transfer in and transfer back out in the middle of the next month. Mimics activity and probably the reason my Chex system report has my wealth index so high(near millionaire status)...which is completely wrong. LMAO

I still have over 20 active CU and bank accounts open after closing those credit unions above.
