Gosh, I really want to do this. Is it better to call if your (father in my case) military family is passed or just try to join online?

As Msmart stated, call them. I called too and my father passed away in 2007. They will ask you what branch was he in the military. They seem to have their way of checking this information out. After you apply they they may ask for more documentation on you. Usually ID and proof of address.
