Re: The Quest for an SSL alternative to Alliant

I'm still learning my way around here...I don't want to derail the topic of SSL's here (a lot of which focuses on NFCU), so to keep this thread clean, I posted elsewhere about the available methods to get a large initial transfer into a new NFCU savings account from another bank before starting your SSL app.

It has been more effort and taken longer than I had expected to fund the NFCU acct, so hopefully the info can help manage expectations for someone else.  It also goes into detail about challenges using Zelle to do the xfer.

Re: The Quest for an SSL alternative to Alliant

Hi Spike.  It's great to see someone who is putting the kind of energy and thought that you have shown in your spreadsheet.  Keep it up!

What we really need is an alternative to Alliant and Navy.  Feel free to keep working with others to find one.

PS.  Note that we also need a list of banks and CUs that work for a person who does not need to keep his loan open for a long time.  Here we could have a much longer list.  You'll see a detailed description of these kinds of people in the Postscript of post #1 in this thread.

Re: The Quest for an SSL alternative to Alliant

Do I have a shot at getting approved at Alliant with a fair/new credit?

(EQ: 652; EX: 623)

Oldest account: 1 yr, 9 mo

3 accounts open

CL: $2,800

No late payments/low usage %

I did have an old derogatory mark from a 3 y/o debit account from a $4 overdraft fee that has since been paid off in the last couple days. (Moved to new city 3 years ago and forgot to close this account)

One of my HP should drop in the coming weeks, I'm wondering if it's worth it.

Re: The Quest for an SSL alternative to Alliant

I believe I have found a suitable SSL alternative to Alliant.  Security Service Federal Credit Union (SSFCU) offers an SSL that is compatible with the SSL Technique previously described.  Membership at SSFCU is open to anyone living in Colorado, Texas, or Utah, as well as to the family of existing members.  I'm a member, and I speak from first-hand experience using the SSL Technique with this credit union.

SSFCU's terms for SSLs are as follows:

$250 - $4,000: 36 months

$4,000 - $10,000: 60 months

$10,000 - $500,000: 120 months

The APR is 3% above the share dividend-earning rate.

When paying the loan online, you're given an option of how you want the payment to be applied.  Click the first radio button that says, "Minimum amount due: $X.XX (Due on xx/xx/xxxx)."  You'll need to make repeated payments of the minimum amount due.  Every time you make such a payment, the due date for the next payment gets pushed back a month.  It'll take you a few minutes to make all those small deposits, but it's worth it.  I did more than a year's worth before coming back here to post about it.

One thing to note is that funds applied to the SSL do not get released immediately.  Rather, they get released the following Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after the loan payment (excluding holidays).

SSFCU did not do a hard pull at any time in this process.  They ran me through ChexSystem, but otherwise didn't pull to open my account, nor to create the SSL.

As an aside, they don't pull credit when applying for a secured credit card with them, either.  They don't advertise this on their website, but members get their choice of three different secured credit cards, all with no annual fees.  I went with the Power Cash Back World Mastercard (1.5% cashback, $100 bonus after spending $500 in 90 days).  The min/max amount of their secured cards is $500-5,000.

Hope this helps.

Re: The Quest for an SSL alternative to Alliant

To be honest, I dont feel like combing through 28 pages of replies, lol has anyone found an alternative to the original SSL? That would benefit me greatly if so my last installment loan has closed and took a pretty large hit for it

Did you look at post #2 in this thread?  It has the header:

CUs/Banks that work for sure (though they may not be perfect)

Re: The Quest for an SSL alternative to Alliant

For anyone living in the Houston, TX area I have confirmed MOBIL OIL FCU offers a SSL with no HP with the ability to pre-pay to <8% and keep original term. They CU does a HP for membership though.

Re: The Quest for an SSL alternative to Alliant

Thanks for the info, @MP15_556.

Would you mind updating the shared spreadsheet with the details about Mobil CU?  They sound like a great option for locals to the area.

Re: The Quest for an SSL alternative to Alliant

I saw some info earlier in the thread that Penfed didn't work but looked like it was just cold calling a CSR rather than really testing; data from @pizza1 suggested it would indeed work from her experience of paying it ahead.

I'm trying to be good right now so not trying the unsecured loan check that they just sent me but has anyone really tested it?
