Re: is there a way around BCU like other CUs?

I am a member of Baxter due to Target affiliation. It’s is my most used deposit account system, it is my favorite CU of which I am a member. If I’m understanding your question properly, if you work with an affiliate company you are not required to be a member, in my experience. You would be shocked how many Target employees are not members, even with the 3% interest on a checking account (with certain criteria met, not hard to do). So the answer is, yes or no haha...but hopefully they are ;-)

Let me try again, I was hoping to learn if my cousin works at CVS but she's not the member of BCU will I be eligible to join BCU?

or she has to join them 1st and then I can become member through her.

Your relative has to be a BCU member before you can join.  The application form asks for the social security number of the relative to check against their membership list.

Sorry for the misinterpretation!  As Maize says, it's not possible at this time. She would first have to be a member for you to join.  But if she is interested, you may be doing her a favor for the suggestion of doing so.

Re: is there a way around BCU like other CUs?

BCU does have geographic eligibility in Northern Illinois (Lake, McHenry, Dupage, Kane, and parts of Cook counties and Southern Wisconsin (Kenosha).  Any relatives there?

Re: is there a way around BCU like other CUs?

With most credit unions to establish membership through family members they need to be members first.  For example, many will say immediate family, so my nieces couldn't join on my membership.  But my brother could, and then my nieces could join on his membership.  There's no limit to the chain ... once a member, all your family can be members too!

There are some exceptions - NFCU apparently lets you join if a grandparent was eligible, and neither the grandparent or your parent needs to be a member first.

Yes, if you join through a family member they need to be a member first as Maize has said (doesn't matter if your family member is eligible due to living in Illinois in their geo area or if they work for a company like CVS or Target that makes them eligible) and they ask for their social security on their application. Its a good question  and perfectly valid though, many credit unions don't require eligible family members to be members before you can join yourself.

And while most credit unions only allow "immediate family members" like siblings, parents, spouses, etc. BCU on the otherhand is quite generous and it extends to cousins, neices, nephews, aunts, uncles, grandchildren and grandparents.

https://www.bcu.org/Member-Center/Membership-Eligibility

You are the immediate or extended qualifying family of an existing member related by blood, marriage, fostering or adoption. Eligible family members include: spouses, parents, children, siblings, domestic partners, grandchildren, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
