ledger/register discrepancies? Does it bug you?

Anyone else obsess needlessly over their ledger or register being off, even if its just .01 cent and in your favor? Smiley Happy

I don't have a set day that I do it but occasionally usually after I pay several of our cards balances as the statements cut I will go back and "run the numbers" again verifying what came in minus what has or is planned to go out this week to make sure it matches whats in our book.Well this morning I ended up .01 cent richer than I thought. Now the decision do I just correct and move on or is it going to bug me so much that I end up going back through the last couple months to find it .

Yeah, whenever things don't balance I find it hard to rest until I find the reason why. I would say it's an illness, or at least a disorder Smiley Happy

Can an obsession over something being orderly really be a disorder?🤔

IDK @NoMoreDebt maybe consider changing your user name to Ebenezer.... you know, just for the holiday season Smiley Very Happy

It bugs me too but I find that the older I get, the less ambition I have in chasing such things down.

You do have a point on having less ambition the older I get to waste much time on it lol. I just marked it out and wrote in the correct balance rather than spend the morning chasing it down but I guess I just sorta scold myself some that way reminding me that I have to pay close attention to the details.

In my earlier years I just worked in large round numbers , close enough's and wishes.  That mixed with just didn't care or whatever it was that possessed me then costed me a lot and caused a lot of grief so i figure I got to make up for lost time . Smiley LOL

Re: ledger/register discrepancies? Does it bug you?

Have spent way too much time a few times with this.

Have to know where the error is.

No just  changing the balance for me ...

99+% it is my mistake     Smiley LOL

Should just except, and move on,  but I can't.

Re: ledger/register discrepancies? Does it bug you?

y'all make me feel like a slacker....LOL  twice a month, i go through my checking account and check off the debits and credits.  since i put all of my daily spend on a credit card, the only things rolling though my account are bill payments and preset savings transfers.  if the credits and debits are as expected, i just roll with whatever the balance says as that is what my disposable spending balance is.

The few of times this has happened to me it came from ham fisting the calculator. Usually I end up with more money than I thought I had thankfully.

It bothers me to no end AND I go back to where I know the balance was correct and redo everything. I'm learning to use a calculator, because usually the errors occur when I do head math.

I don't stress as much about it as I used to, because 100% of the time it's Amex reducing my scheduled payment amount because a credit hit between statement closing (and me scheduling the payment for a future date immediately after it closes) and the actual payment date, and they do not allow payments for more than a card's current balance.

What does annoy me is that some financial institutions are quite slow to actually pull payments when scheduled (hi PenFed!), and since I schedule payments in clusters and use Excel for my checking registers I am constantly having to cut and paste entries down to future dates as a result to get the balance column right.
