I currently have 10 different medical collections. They are all within 18 months of one another. I was uninsured and had major surgery (gallbladder).
2 of the 10 collections are: $58 and $110. If I PFD with those two, will that help my score or is having 8 medical collections just as damaging as 10?
FYI, the other 8 collections are between $1,200 and $11,000. I'm not touching those.

Getting rid of the smaller ones will definitely be beneficial.
You should have been eligible for charity care - look into that option. A lot of folks here have used that to get medical collections removed. What state are you in?

I was in North Carolina. I am now on the West Coast.
At the time of my bills, my income for my family of 4 was $13K. Six months ago I took a job making $50k. However, I still cant afford the $20K+ in medical bills.

Doesn't matter what you are making now, only what you were making then. Call the hospital and inquire about getting these written off under charity care. They may require you provide some proof of income for that year.

As NormanFH said contact the the original creditor to see if you quality for charity care but do not contact any collection agency. Once you have done this and you know which if any are not qualified google the HIPAA Letter process follow it exactly as laid out. If you have any problems finding the website or have questions PM me.
The Financial Department at the hospital in North Carolina said I must be a North Carolina resident when I apply for Charity Care. So, now that I live out of state I cannot apply, regardless of my residency during the hospital treatment. I was told I have no other recourse.
Bummer.
As was already mentioend above, google "HIPAA LETTER" and follow the process.
