A 2005 Collection item

What should I do with a 2005 collection item for gosh - $23 a newspaper claims I didn't pay them and then I moved. I didn't know this was on my credit report as I've used another credit reporting agency for info. What to do about it?

Re: A 2005 Collection item

I would dispute it...I for one am tired of companies that don't send a final bill and then sock you with a collection.

Re: A 2005 Collection item

There should be a limit on amounts they are allowed to report. seriously, someone loses 23 dollars on you and you lose thousands over the next 7 years. That seems bass ackwards to me.

Re: A 2005 Collection item

I don't see how it can be legal to report without sending a final bill!

Kind of like medical bills! Not giving you an opportunity to make good on the debt is not fair and as far as I am concerned, not ethical!

How do I dispute this?

Re: A 2005 Collection item

If I call the collection agency and pay this will it show up on my report from 7 years since when I paid it or 7 years since when it was filed?

Re: A 2005 Collection item

Dispute it with any of the credit bureaus who are reporting it.
They may just delete it! (Hopefully!)

If you pay the collection, it will stay on report 7 years from DOFD (Date of first delinquency or when it went bad).

Re: A 2005 Collection item

Can someone tell me how to even find the name of the collection company, there's only a number on my credit report?

Re: A 2005 Collection item

You'll probably have to pull a copy of your credit reports from annualcreditreport.com if you haven't already gotten your free ones this year. It will be more detailed. I've also found truecredit good for finding creditor contact info and names.

Re: A 2005 Collection item

You should pull your reports directly from the CRAs to get the full info.
