I don't think I have a basis for a complaint. They're allowed to try to collect (assuming this is legit). This isn't appearing on my current credit report (fingers crossed it stays that way!) and they haven't threatened to sue. In fact, their attempt to collect is so tepid, I have no doubt they know that they can't do anything about this except ask "pretty please?". I was just curious if C&D was my best bet, or if the experts would counsel a different approach.
Shogun, I probably would have just paid something to try to get this to go away if I had known then what I know now. I used to assume that the only way to deal with credit blemishes was wait. But at this point there's no incentive to pay a red cent. Especially because I really don't know if this is legit, I just know that it was on my credit for a long time until it aged off a few years ago.

You are correct, there is NO basis to file a complaint with the CPFB. They are well within their right to attempt to collect.
You can send them a DV and if the debt is valid, offer them a very small percent to settle. It can't be added to your CR and the debt will be taken care of. Settled is paid, no restarting of the SOL.
