Re: How many accounts enough to build credit?

I maxed out my discover card, left just $11 available balance. I'm going to pay it down before my statement cuts on the 9th. I'm curious if I pay the full $1,789 and leave a $0 balance, does it still count as a on time payment for that month (green checkmark on CR) since there's no payment due? Or is it best to leave a small $10 balance to report for that regard?

The reason I maxed it out is to show discover that I'm using the full CL so they'll approve me for a CLI in 3 months. I would like to keep growing this card since it will be my primary. I also want to keep my payment streak going with full green checkmarks on my CR.

I would like to pay it down to $0 just so I can get the points that I lost from allowing a balance to report on my cap1 card last week but I don't mind waiting until the next cycle to bring my cap1 back down to $0 reporting for those points back. I'm going to get a score bump anyway once my new Self balance reports next week with the chunk payment I made.

Re: How many accounts enough to build credit?

I paid down my discover card yesterday. I left a $12 balance on it to report on the 9th.

I went to refresh my monthly credit scores on the Experian app this morning in hopes that my Self credit builder balance was updated and to my surprise the account has been removed from my Equifax. It's as if it never existed. My score went up by 7 points but now it only shows my 2 secured cards listed. I emailed Self to see what's going on.

Not sure how this works but if they add it back to my Equifax, will it show as a new account and reset my newest account age? Or will my account history be saved?

they'll be required to report accurately, so they can't just report it as new and pretend the past didn't happen.

it should come back reporting correctly

Re: How many accounts enough to build credit?

Welp, the collection file was just added back on my EX report today lol. Score tanked 49 points. It's due to drop off in April 2023 so I'll call in for a early exclusion in a couple months. Oh well.

**bleep** that sucks but at least it's only a few more months and it shall be gone for good. I just slipped doing AZEO and all went zero. I lost 14 points for that. I will get them back once my GM rewards card posts. How have you been @MarkyB other than that?

Yes, you'll get them back.

Chapter 13:

  • Burned: AMEX, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, and South County Bank (now Bank of Southern California)
  • Filed: 26-Feb-2015
  • MoC: 01-Mar-2015
  • 1st Payment (posted): 23-Mar-2015
  • Last Payment (posted): 07-Feb-2020
  • Discharged: 04-Mar-2020
  • Closed: 23-Jun-2020

I categorically refuse to do AZEO!

Re: How many accounts enough to build credit?

Hey @RobynJ all is good, thanks for asking.

I've been doing some experimenting lately to see which changes affect what. My latest test was charging my discover card on the statement cut day. I found out that any charges made with the card on the same day the statement ends won't be reported until the next statement. However, any charges made before then does get reported, even if it's the day right before statement cut day.

My discover statement cut with a $10 balance which put me under 1% utilization for this month. I paid my Cap1 card in full so that will report $0 on Friday and give me back (hopefully) my 19 point drop on Equifax from last month when I had allowed it to report a balance.

I read some posts on here about people getting EE with Experian 5 months early. I'm thinking about giving them a call to see if I can get that collection file removed now but I don't mind waiting a couple more months. I checked my official credit reports last night and confirmed the dropoff date remains April 2023 for Experian and June 2023 for Transunion.

I emailed Self yesterday for an update on my Equifax reporting and they said "Equifax confirmed they will reinstate the tradeline on your credit report" and that they're "still working to fix the issue". Going by that statement it seems as if Equifax removed the account on their own behalf for whatever reason. I wish Self was more transparent and told me exactly what happened.

Re: How many accounts enough to build credit?

Glad to hear that Self has been taken care of. My scores are still doing well but took a little dip for the new auto and Amex card. Keep doing what you are as it looks like you're making things happen in the right direction.

I don't think it works like that. Whether a charge shows up on your current statement should depend on when the final charge posts, not on when the initial charge was made. Otherwise, they'd have to make corrections for things like gas or hotel holds, restaurant tips, or those $1 temporary holds they use to test if your card is real, where the initial pending charge doesn't necessarily match the final posted charge.

IME, most charges post in 1 to 2 days, a small fraction post in 3 to 4 days, and out of the 500 or so I looked at one took 5 days. This can depend on the retailer, with mom & pop shops often taking longer, and can also be affected by weekends or holidays.
