NEWBIE! OMG Questions!

Hi Guys!

I am so excited to be here and to finally fix my ****! I've made some stupid decisions in the past not understanding the importance of credit and the score etc. Anyway...

My boyfriend added me on his bank of america. Credit karma said my score is 445'ish. And they never showed that the authorized account was added to my account! Until today I checked CCT and OMG! My scores are so much higher now, the bank of america credit card of $30,000 is showing on it and all three fico 8 scores differ so much!

EX 565

EQ 528

TU 724

I noticed TU shows no negative remarks whatsoever, although i have many, and it shows nothing in collections??? WHY? I mean i like the score but still...

I had applied for a secured card last week! And shockingly I got approved. I still have to 'fund' it to make it legit, which I haven't done yet. Should I still go ahead and get this secured card? Would it help? would it hurt? I hope to get my own credit cards soon that are unsecured of course, and I need to fix my score and get it higher. Please help, I am so new to this.

Re: NEWBIE! OMG Questions!

Before we can advise properly, can you tell us a bit more about the cause of low scores? Previous bankruptcy, if so , when was it discharged, Chp 7 or 13?  Do you have any current open credit, installment loan ( student, auto, mortgage, personal), and credit cards at all?

Did the scores tank to do excessive late payments 30- 60- 90-120 days, or accounts that are charged off, or have been placed for collections?

It would help if you could list each

Card A $ ______ balance, #___________ credit limit, no lates

Card B "                                                                        ", 6- 30 days, 2 -60 days

Personal loan  balances, and status, open, closed charged off, judgment, repo'd, etc.

Re: NEWBIE! OMG Questions!

hi DollyLama!

I have 5 accounts in collections. of those, 1 is macys credit card which i'm paying off next week $900 balance. but the account is closed. I have no open credit cards and I havent had any in years.

And capital one bank debit card which went to negative (Paying this off in 2 weeks, balance of $538).

CreditOne bank CC, which i screwed up ($940). I will settle this with them. (closed, but still owe balance)

and about 4 other small debts (under $500 each). All of the open collections will be paid off within the next 3 weeks!

I have many late payments on my car. Which I started paying on time past 2 months again.

I have many student loans which are all in excellent standing.

I have a few charge offs. Debt I've settled in the past, or paid in full. It all shows as 'closed' (for years now). I am disputing all of those the next few weeks.

no mortgage, no foreclosure. no bankruptcy. Just silly mistakes from when i was young and stupid.

Re: NEWBIE! OMG Questions!

Hi everyone,

I'm back. I just reall need some important advice. I'm tired of making bad decisions because I don't know any better. So reading from the above information. My boyfriend wants to add me to his AMEX. It has a $0 balance. Would it really help me in the future as far as getting approved for my OWN Credit line of any bank, it doesn't have to be AMEX. I just want to start building my credit score and fix my mistakes of the past.

Also, I've mentioned above that I was approved for a secured credit card. of $200. I have not funded it yet, but wanted to get final advice here first. I'm not sure how much the annual fee is with OpenSky Secured credit. I can easily find out. Again, my goal here is to start having credit.

So far I only have 1 active account with Bank of America for $30,000 as an Authorized User! The balance on this card is 8%. It's my boyfriends account. Please advise me of what to do. Thank you all!

Re: NEWBIE! OMG Questions!

You are going to need some revolvers in your name if you are going to improve the score. The consensus around here is you need at least 3 cards and an installment loan.

You should try to do pay for deletes on the collections. If you search around the forum you will find a lot of information on how to get success with these for various companies. If you can get the pfd then you should pay, but try to get an agreement to get them deleted first.

For the ones you have already paid you can work on sending some goodwill letters to get the negatives removed.

I'm not positive about CK, but if you look on a fico report from something like my fico or annual credit report, the list of things on what is hurting your score is in order with what ever is listed first is what is holding you back the most.

Re: NEWBIE! OMG Questions!

If you obtain the secured card, which I'm quite sure it will be with a high annual fee and low line of secured funds, it will help under the followi

To never let a statement balance exceed 28.9% report to bureaus. Pay your bill without fail on time, before due date each month, and set up an auto pay as insurance against forgetfulness.

You only want a "start" on the card, not long term. You want to move on as your credit improves to Bank Cards with no annual fees, and rewards, being cash back, good lines of credit and rewards you with credit line increases on your good pay history.

I will say, please, please be very patient on this journey. It will be awhile before you see the scores really improve well. By all means, yes, yes, call the collection agencies you plan on paying in full, plead your case of mishandling earlier credit problems, not understanding and you want to rectify the situation and do what is right by paying what is due, and plead for pay for deletes (it will remove the account as if you never had it).

Some you might have luck with, others you won't. You will just have to pay and let them show 0 balance and they will eventually age off your credit file.

Your auto loan, you have 2 months on time payment. Keep it up, each month-here on out. After a year of flawless pay, you goodwill letter to try to get them to start to consideration of removing some of the early late pays, as this will also hinder your scores the full term of loan even after it's paid and closed. There is a thread about goodwill saturation technique on the forums.

As your scores begin to move up, then try pre-qual with major banks, Capital One, and Discover are two that come to mind. It might be secured at beginning, but it gets your foot in with the banks, and eventually will graduate to unsecured. At this time, you want to close the "starter card" if it's subprime, Credit One, etc, with excessive annual fees, no rewards and never extends credit lines.

Patience, patience.

Re: NEWBIE! OMG Questions!

Thank you for the great reply!

Yes, I will be and am paying my car installment on time now! I am so excited, it will take a while to see a difference since I've always been late.

So, with the AU on BofA ($30,000 limit which stands at 8%), and with my new OpenSky of $200 CL under my name. I will need one more right? Will the Amex added as an AU (0% balance right now) be complete 3cc and 1 installment?

Then I wait and keep paying on time, is this what they mean with 'gardening'? What should be my next step after I have 3cc listed above and 1 installment?

Thank you SO MUCH!

Re: NEWBIE! OMG Questions!

By the way, the BofA added me as AU and back dated me of 6 years which is amazing. Is it true that AMEX starts you on the day of the AU being approved?

Re: NEWBIE! OMG Questions!

Sorry.. also, is it true that AMEX reports the AU as an actual account holder? I read this on NerdWallet.

Re: NEWBIE! OMG Questions!

Gardening means to not apply for any credit for certain period of time, as each new account reduces your age of youngest credit, the average age of accounts. Also, each inquiry into your credit report that involves a hard pull (applying for new credit) will ding your score, rather approved or declined. From a FICO 8 perspective, they are no longer scoreable after one year.

Ultimately the 3 cards and 1 installment should be individual accounts. Not an authorized user account. Sure it helps with age to some, but anything requiring underwriting, new auto loan in future, mortgage, etc. will often dismiss these accounts as they know you are not responsible for repayment of accounts, can be removed at any time by the account holders. So you build your personal credit file.

If I were in your situation, which may different from what others here may view, you have 1 installment, 1 credit card individual soon to be on your reports, and 1 account as AU.

I would not apply for 2nd and 3rd until you have a years worth of solid history of no late payments on your current auto loan, prove yourself with Open Sky, never letting a balance report more than 28.9% of the credit limit, for a year. Think of this as Day 1.

In the meantime, I would start working on getting the pay for deletes if possible on the collections, this is by far with the late payments that will hold your score down by well over 100 points alone.
