Portfolio Recovery help

I have two collection accounts with Portfolio Recovery in Norfolk, VA.  I am going to send DV today, and then the PFD.  I need these accounts deleted from my credit reports because I am wanting to purchase a home soon.  Has anyone had any dealing with them?  What should I expect?  I also have a couple of CC accounts that are showing on my credit report.  Can I send them a DV also or are DV only for CA?

Re: Portfolio Recovery help

You can only DV a CA, an OC doesn't have to comply.

Do a search on these forums for Portfolio Recovery and you'll get lots of reading.

Re: Portfolio Recovery help

If they are unpaid, past SOL, and you can pay..........send a PFD.

If paid.......send a GW.

Re: Portfolio Recovery help

They are not paid, nor past SOL.  But I can and am willing to pay.

Re: Portfolio Recovery help

Portfolio Recovery is one of my paid collections and took a long time to report to CRAs that it was paid, even with a dispute.  Keep trying for a PFD if you can.

Then you can DV them........if the validate......send PFD........if the file summons in meantime...you pay them to keep from having a judgement. If they don't validate.........then it is removed from your report.

Or

You can skip DV and go straight for PFD.........they may or may not accept.......may or may not be awakened to the debt and send a summons.

Personal choice on how to proceed really.

I had a few that were very small, not past SOL,  just sent PFD and skipped DV. I don't figure they'll issue a summons regardless, but am ready to pay if they do.

I also DV'd a few that were in SOL, b/c they are not mine and no way can prove it and am not worried.

Re: Portfolio Recovery help

I hate PRA!! I reported them to the BBB, VA AG, PA AG and FTC. Definitely try a PFD.  If you pay  even before the account is reported to the CRA (within the 30 day grace period), they will report a $0 collection account and will not delete at all.

Re: Portfolio Recovery help

PRA sent me a letter from their General Counsel on July 20, 2008 and stated that to settle my dispute amicably with them they agreed to delete the trade line from all three credit reporting agencies (Universal Deletion form via E-Oscar). I have it in writing. I pulled my CR's through Myfico.com and sure enough the trade has been deleted. My scores jumped 70 yo 80 points across the board. This was my only 'bad' trade line.

I disputed a debt with these jerks since November 2007. I caught them violating just about every section of the FDCPA and FCRA and I called them on it. I backed it up with a certified letter each and every week for approximately 8 months. I'm sure they were shredding it the moment they received it.

They denied any wrongdoing but I persisted by contacting their local chapter of the Better Business Bureau and filled out the online complaint form. I also filed an online ethics complaint with their trade organization based in Minnesota.

Bottom line is to have a lot of patience and persistence. Never give them an inch. Take a position and stand solid. Even when I was going through this whole dispute process they would poison my credit files with such things as '120 + days past due' or actually report an inflated amount of what they claimed I owed. This is a tactic they use to force you into a compromise and I just hit them back with more letters and pointing out their violations of the FDCPA and FCRA.

Apparently, it works.

Re: Portfolio Recovery help

Boy, are you lucky. These idiots stated that I am in an 'installment' for my utility collection from 04 and mentioned to Experian that I paid 1/3rd of it.

I just worry now that if I do pay them they will send an udpate to Equifax (no record of them) and screw me royally somehow. They scare me.

Congrats to you!
