What does it mean if a user is neither online nor offline?

Normally the profile page indicates whether a forum member is online or offline.

What does it mean if a user's profile page indicates neither online nor offline status? Does it indicate that the user is no longer a member of the forum?

Yes, I checked it out. Under "Privacy" there's a setting for that.

I can't really fathom why someone would care about whether others know if they're online or not   But there it is.
