Claim Filied with Govenment

I had some Citi student loans that went unpaid for a while. I just looked at my report and in the status is says "claim filed with Government" and in status details it says "this account is scheduled to continue on record until Sep 2015"

I have 4 of these. I can see that 2 were transfered to Education Credit Management. No where else on my credit report do the others show. Should I even worry about them?

Also, the 2 that were transfered to Education Credit Management say that "this account is scheduled to continue on record until Sep 2018". If I am unable to pay these by that time will they just come off my credit?

Any advice is much appreciated! Figuring out my student loans has been a real challange after not being able to pay for them for years.

Re: Claim Filied with Govenment

It sounds like these are federal student loans that have defaulted.  Although they may fall of your report, federal student loans are not subject to the statute of limitations.  They can be resold, reported on your credit, and collected on indefinitely.  They can garnish your wages without a judgment, seize your tax returns, and even withhold some of your Social Security payments if it reaches that point.

My reccomendation would be to log in to the National Student Loan Data System (nslds.ed.gov) to see what you owe and who currently holds the loans.  Then, you should read up about rehabilitation.  There's a lot of information on these forums and available from the Department of Education available.  Rehab is a great way to get your loans back on track, repair some of the damage to your credit and get on the path to being debt-free.
