just closed one of my Capitol One card (actually, i combined it or consolidated it) and my score dropped 39 points!!!!!!! thought it stays on your report 10 years and doesn't effect your age of credit much ? its my 2nd oldest account (2012) but i transfered the credit line to my ''oldest'' capitol one account opened in 2011. Technically, i should have closed 2011 account because it had a lower limit but figured that would been dumb since its indeed my oldest and first credit card so i closed the 2012 instead and rolled that over to 2011. They were both same cards and i got tired using both or having both same cards in my wallet so i was glad i saw this new feature ''Capitol One Credit Line Consolidation.'' i hope i get my 39 points back next month!
Did they have the same billing date? If your closed account had the high limit and the new combine account hasnt yet updated on the bureaus yet, that sounds like it might have increased your usage. Outside of that not sure.
Mine stayed the same even though the new combine account hasnt updated yet. Brought up my utils 4 percent which I guess wasnt much to lower my score.
If your using CreditKarma to keep track, they only use open accounts for their scoring model. It would be strange if a true Fico score would drop that much.
Is it possible that only the closed card after consolidation has reported and not the other one with the higher CL now? That was my first thought.
Hope that you're not basing your post on the Capitol One credit tracker. If so, it is completely useless and should be discarded

AAoA isn't the only factor that affects your score and no, AAoA is not impacted by closing a credit card. See also:

What score are you referring to? Have you carefully reviewed your reports before and after the scoring change? You need to do so in order to understand the cause of any score change.
I find it amazing posters will post comments and then will not reply to it. So how in the world would combining have any impact to his score going down 39 points?. ok. his util climbed before the new account reported. I would think that would happen close to the same time unless the dates are completely different on the cap one accounts. or as noted. Using CK or some other nonsense scoring method. Put a little more info there op. or show us a screen shot where you score went down due to closed account. When i closed my oldest. My ck score dropped 100 points. But not a single point was lost on my fico score. Please post these results so we can all see.
It was my transunion score that dropped - 39 points on CreditKarma. I think they use transunion Vintage score 3.0 so I will wait a few days for BarClay, Walmart and Discover update my score because they use Transunion FicoScore I think. I wonder what my Experian score will be from First National Bank of Omaha. They use FICO Bankcard Score 8 I get for free each month along with Equifax from Citi group. I don't rely so much on scores I get from Capital one.
