PSA - Probably not what you want to hear but I also harbor the same concern of losing 800 scores but I'm often reminded "what is the purpose of a great score if you can't use it". Not saying to spend a lot or apply for something you don't want or need.
Everything stated above is sound and thickening your file should help you down the line. Achieving 800 or even the elusive 850 scores is a great accomplishment, often to someone who worked really hard to rebuild and should be kudo'd. Owning you property free and clear is a greater accomplishment in my opinion.
I'm also reminded here Fair, Good, Very Good and Excellent is just fluff language used by CMS, although encouraging. Even in the mid upper 700's your scores will likely get you the same rates and opportunities your 800 scores will provide you. Lenders don't see the Very Good or Excellent. You're either going to be approved with the applicable rates or denied based on the lender's criteria.
I'm still learning to get over it and as time goes by those reminders have started to kick in. It's okay. I'll be fine as long as I continue to apply the lessons learned here and pay my bills on time and don't incur expense I can't pay for.
Back to regularly scheduled responses to your question Good Luck!
I'd like to thank everyone for the helpful replies. I decided to try to broaden my credit card holdings a bit and apped for the Citibank Double Cash Back card. Their answer is below:
"We have received your application and further processing is required. We will contact you in approximately 7-10 days regarding our decision. If approved, be sure to visit citicards.com to register and manage your account online. Thank you for requesting a Citi® Double Cash Card.
Application ID: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:"
In other words, "screw you".
I tried Capital One Savor - approved - $1,000 CL. Based on my prior experience, Cap1 does not have any desire to turn that into anything I can use (like to buy airline tickets, which I do twice a year). I know I burned a HP on both of these, so I figure I will just live with it and forget about trying to add a new TL. Maybe I can talk with my Credit Union about a SSL but the last time I did that they wanted $7 cash security for each $1 borrowed, which made absolutely NO sense to me, so I refused the loan.
OK, Plan B is...... ?

No it doesn't necessarily mean that. It can also mean that Citi wants to verify your identity. When that occurs Citi sends a letter to your mailing address with instructions on how to call them back for verification purposes.

Flyingifr What is your AoOA? How many total accounts do you have on your credit report (both open and closed count)?
15 accounts - 5 open 10 closed.
What made you choose Citibank and Capital One? If you are seeking the wisdom of the forum, why didn't you discuss it with us BEFORE you apped?
I chose the Citi card because its features seemed to be a decent fit with what I was looking for and Creditcard.com indicated I had very good chances of approval. After Citi's rsponse I apped at Cap 1 because their card looked like a decent fit with what I wanted and Credicard.com indicated I had an excellent chance of approval. I was approved - for $1000 limit, which, given my intended use of the card (travel, buying airline tickets for my twice-yearly long trips, average cost of each $8,000+) is useless.
I cannot even fathom a FI asking for 7 times the loan amount for security. What FI is this? Anywhere I'm aware of requires the exact amount borrowed, if its secured. Then it's released as you pay it down. $500 loan is sufficient and it doesn't have to be secured anyway! Just has to be a loan.
Pyramid FCU in Pima County AZ. They wanted security of not only the share account the loan proceeds would have gone into, but also my checking account and 2 CD's I had with them. Total of $7,000 securing a $1,000 loan.
Navy rocks!
Plan B? I gave you knowledge which gave you several options.
So you probably took a triple pull (one at each bureau) for Cap One. For someone scared of losing points, it's shocking you applied with the only lender famous for doing a hard inquiry at all 3 CRAs for an app. How many points did it hit you for at each bureau?
Nope - Experian only on both apps. The combined to HP's cost me 13 points and I just got thrown out of the 800 club. Exactly what I did NOT want to do. I am considering declining the Cap 1 card so that it does not affect my AAoA. I have given up on Citi. My experience with these "we will get back to you in X days" is simply polite wording for "you should have your AA letter in X days. Have a nice life."
Did Citi double pull, considering your ages and low number of open revolvers? Whats the damage?

Exactly. You should try calling them and ask if they need more information. That's probably all they want, verification of your information. If your scores are what you say they are, you should qualify for any card that you want to get.
And I agree with the other poster, Cap1 was a poor choice.
Creditcard.com's suggestions are marketing and have very wide guidelines of what they think your chances are. They do not take your whole profile into account and do not compare them to each creditor's guidelines. They make money from your clicks/applications so take their approval ratings with a grain of salt.
Do you have your EQ/TU frozen or locked?

I have no CRAs locked (yet).
