How many points will my score increase as an AU?

My husband, who has excellent credit, is adding me to one of his credit cards that he's had for about 13 years.  It's an account that's in good standing, and he's never had a late payment on it.  Does anyone know approximately how much my score will increase once I'm added?  How long does it typically take for it to show up on my credit report?

I won't be the right person to answer this, but whoever is will need WAY more information:

  • Do you have derogatories on your credit history?
  • Do you have any other credit cards, installment loans, or other positive tradelines?
  • If so, what are the ages of these accounts and what is your credit card utilization?
  • What is your husband's credit card utilization?

What else do you have on your credit reports?  How long it takes to show up sometimes depends on who the creditor is, as some report more quickly than others.

Hi there.

I don't think anyone can accurately predict what might happen in any given situation because all our reports are different and constantly changing.

Being added as an AU could help you IF the account is older than any of yours (older than your current AAoA is even better), IF the payment history is long and clean, IF the utilization is very low, and IF it will report to the CRA's. Not all cards will do this. You need to ask the company first. You will inherit the entire history of this account. One caveat however; if this account starts to go south your credit will be affected as well. Keep that in mind.

As for how quickly it will report that also is difficult to say because each issuer might handle this is a slightly different manner.

I'm sorry if I didn't give you any concrete answers but such is the way of credit I'm afraid. One acronym you will see over and over is YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary.

You also might want to consider a potential negative aspect of adding the credit history of another to your credit report.

Should any party reviewing your score and credit report desire to consider only your own personal credit history and score, the addition of an AU removes their ability to use your FICO score for that purpose.  They have no way of generating a separate score that evaluates only your own credit risk.

The score may be better, but its usefulness may not.

I added my wife to my cards.  Her credit karma TU score went up 20 points in 1 month.  It showed that it dropped her cc utilization.  I immediately added myself to her cards also.  Hoping next month when all the cards are paid down to below 10% utilization we both see big jumps.

Just understand that a FAKO raise doesn't always equal a FICO raise.  In fact, my FICOs have been on the rise in a big way recently, but my PLUS score FAKOs have stayed very low through much of that.
