Huge drop for using my card

So, is this normal? I have a card with a 10k limit and I used it, and put close to 10k on it, and paid it off, like I do all my cards each month, but I didn't time it well, and before my payment was recorded, the 10k balance was reported and my scores dropped by 38 points! For just using the card. Will it all bounce back when they see it is actually a zero balance?

Oddly, my American Express charges never seem to be reported, and I spent at least 40-50k on them each month, which I also pay off each month--it's advertising for my business. Puzzled why the BankofAmerica balance that was there for like two seconds, docked my overall credit so much.

Yes... reporting maxed utilization on a single card is a score killer.  You'll get those points back once the card reports lowered utilization next month.  You could contact BofA and see if they'll do an off cycle report to the bureaus, as a courtesy, so it reports $0 sooner.

Your Amex - is it a charge card?  If so, thats why you never saw a decrease in score when reporting high balances.  Charged cards don't report a credit limit so there's no way to determine utilization- it is therefore excluded from the utilization metrics but included in the balances owed metrics.

Thank you. Yes, the AMEX has no upper limit, so that makes sense. Thanks, again!

Amex charge cards aren't factored into utilization.

Amex business cards don't appear on your personal report at all.

Re: Huge drop for using my card

The thread title is a bit misleading, as it's not really accurate.  You didn't lose any points for using a card.  You lost points for a card reporting near maxed out utilization.  These are two very different things.  Your score takes into consideration your reported balances.  Once your ~$10k balance reports back to whatever it was prior, you'll see exactly the same amount of points you lost return.
