Impact of Rebucket -16pts

I'm down to my last negative TL. I have an 18month old 30 day late with Ford/Mazda credit. Well after GWing them 3 times, I got frustrated and submitted a dispute through EQ. The TL is wrong because it shows the account as open but it's been closed for over a year. Well EQ removed it from my credit scoring and showed me as having no missed payments. Well the result of that was that my score dropped 16pts. Well yesterday Ford verified and the negative reappeared. And my score went up 15pts...classic rebucket? I guess in the group with no negatives I'm a 715, but among the people with a negative I'm a 730. You can bet I'm done messing with that last neg TL.

The obvious question is was this an account that helps your length of credit or average age and the answer is no. My oldest account is 20+ years and my average account age is 9 yrs. The Ford account is 6yrs old, so it doesn't help my overall history. I really didn't pay much attention to this rebucket thing until now, but it's real and it can impact your score.

Ah, I love posts like this! Nice and clean; nothing else going on; beautiful example of cause-and-effect.

Yes, you ever-so-briefly moved into the squeaky clean bucket. With a twenty-year history and no derogs, I have to assume that you have high util or low average age or something. Are you an AU on an old card, but otherwise your average age is around 4 or 5 years or something? Otherwise, I would have expected not a drop, but a jump to mid-750's, anyway.

The only reason that many people's scores drop with re-bucketing is because there's something on their reports that's weaker than their new peers. If they otherwise match their peers, their scores would probably go up immediately.

Thanks for adding that bit about disputing because it was showing as open instead of closed. I would have been sad to have had to whisk this one away to no-no land. Smiley Wink

Re: Impact of Rebucket -16pts

I believe Whirled is headed in the right direction. I dont believe a 30 day late puts you in one of the 2 negative buckets - I think it is more likely the loss of installment mix on the report during the dispute. It shows the 30 days is hurting much less after 18 months than the 20ish points you get for a non-mortgage installment.

My reading on the 2 negative buckets is that one is likely for bankruptcies and the other is for major lates or some number of lates. 30 day lates are so common that I don't think half the credit consumers are scrunched into a negative bucket like that. FICO doesn't even attempt to predict 30 day lates, their formulas are intended to predict major delinquincies (90+ and loan defaults)

Good catch! I'm up too late. *yawn*

Dang, that would have been such a pretty example, too! Smiley Very Happy

No, far from it. I have 3 open installment accounts reporting balances and 7 paid off auto loans, 2 mortgages and 3 credit cards with balances reporting, 9 open credits cards with 0 balances. So mix wasn't an issue.

Yes my utilization is too high. I'm in the 30's now, down from 100+% 4 mths ago. I also have 10 accounts reporting balances which I know is a little too many, I have over 35 accounts on my report. I get a flag for 10 accounts reporting, but no flag for 9.

Re: Impact of Rebucket -16pts

so then maybe there is a difference between squeaky clean report and having one baddie if it was not an installment loan situation. You probably fell into the squeaky clean bucket after the late drop and because of your high UTIL% and # of accounts reporting, your score dropped in that bucket. If i am wrong please let me know.
