Regaining points after HP inquires

Just curious, are there any data points that would tease out when FICO points are that are lost after HP inquires are recovered.  Of course, this would be with no other changes to the report.  I know they are not scorable after 12 months, but is there are short term gain, say at 3/6/9 months.

Starting FICO 8 December 2017

FICO 8 as of 6/7/20

Re: Regaining points after HP inquires

In my case the points per inquiry are minimal at 1-2.

Depends more on the scorecard you're associated with at the time in which they get dropped or added.

If you have a clean scorecard then it's less and if you have some items that are dirty then it's more.  If you have a thin file it's more points.  Usuaully it's all null after 6 months from a points standpoint though as your new account has aged a bit and gained more points than the inquiry.

No, there is no gain prior to 365 days.  If one loses X points for an inquiry, they gain back X points when an inquiry becomes unscoreable.

+1 to what BBS said.

OE, are you sure inquiries ding dirty files? I’m pretty sure they do not, from what I’ve read, but I could be wrong.

I did not track it well enough, but I sort of think that going from 0 to 1 INQ on my very dirty, thick file did result in a 1 or 2 point drop. It should certainly not be taken as gospel - a lot happening in my credit files - but this is what I recall when the INQ hit day to day, and no other changes were observed.

Re: Regaining points after HP inquires

In my case I didnt have any cards for yrs. Once I started to get cards. The more I got. The less of a ding to my score forthe HP. In fact when I got the PP MC a few months back. I didnt lose a single point. Whereas my first card out of BK I believe was like 6 or 8 points for the HP. Which returned after a year. The larger the credit file I believe as in my case. And others have mentioned. The less you'll see them affect your scores.

Re: Regaining points after HP inquires

It may not necessarily be the size of the credit file, but also the raw number of HPs.  It's believed that once a certain number of scoreable inquiries is reached (say, 10-14) that additional inquiries at that point no longer adversely impact score, as maximum penalty from them is already being realized.

+ 1 to what BBS said. There is also the binning theory.

Re: Regaining points after HP inquires

Agreed with @FireMedic and @BBS. I had two scorable inquiries on EX fall this month, one on the 5th and one today. I have the vast majority of my inquiries on EX - most of my lenders pull that bureau - so at the beginning of the month there were probably 13 on there. When each of these inquiries fell this month, my score didn’t budge. As the year progresses, I’ll start seeing points most likely - I have 6 more that will age to 12 months and fall out of scoring by November. I think I’ll start seeing points by that time. I have 5 on EQ and 4 on TU and I’m sure that as they come off, points will be realized.

I think I have 6 also, we should compare in November.
