Re: Experiment in paying all revolvers to zero

I usually just have one card reporting a balance each month but can have a few report without seeing my scores drop. Like this month, I have one card reporting at 34% and 3 reporting 1%. No score change.  Axctually, I did have a score change. My EQ08 gained 7 points today. I have to study my report more to try to determine why.

EQ - 698 / TU - 672 / EX - 686

Capital One Savor - $16000 / Capital One Venture - $13000 / Travel Advantage Visa - $11500 / TD Cash Card - $7500 / Bread Rewards AMEX - $6950 / Apple Card - $6500 / TD Double Up - $5500 / Mercury - $5000 / Ally Master Card - $4300 / DCU Visa - $3000 / Capital One QuickSilver - $500

Re: Experiment in paying all revolvers to zero

OK everything reported at zero.

But I don't like this experiment.

My EX FICO 8 dropped a sickening 13 points.

At least this confirms: (1) all revolvers at zero is b.a.d.

                                        (2) simulator does not take this into account

I don't think I'm going to stick around to experiment further with TU & EQ. I've seen enough. My EX score is the least volatile of my scores.

TU dropped 9 points.

This is no fun at all. I'm here to build my scores, not crush them.

Purchases take too long to post.

Then I had a brainstorm -- I took a $25 cash advance from an account that's got tomorrow as its statement date.

That should take me ouf of zero balance hell Smiley Happy

I'll try never to anger the banking gods again.

Not for nothing, SJ, but didn't you more or less know that this was going to happen based on previous member data?  Were you expecting a different result for some reason?

Knowing it would happen, and being man enough to take the pain when it does happen, are two completely different attributes, one I have, and one I apparently don't have.

Re: Experiment in paying all revolvers to zero

I guess I didn't understand the purpose of being man enough to take the pain, I suppose.  Like if you know that the last 30 people that have jumped in front of busses have resulted in fatalities, I wouldn't say it's being man enough to tempt fate and try the same thing when the odds are heavily stacked against you.  But, that's just me Smiley Wink

Had you said this experiment was to see if you could take the pain of losing the points I may have understood that angle, but from what I gathered from your original post you were questioning whether or not you'd lose the points in the first place (will I really die if i jump in front of this bus?) which had me a bit confused from the start.

I fully expected that when all revolving accounts hit zero I would lose points, based on other people's experiences.

But when by happenstance I realized that I was within a week of actually achieving that for my own portfolio, which is rare, I decided to try it and see what happens, and also to see what the simulator predicted.

Well what happened was I lost 13 points in EX and 9 points in TU, despite the simulator's prediction of a small point gain.
