Utilization dropped and no score change?

I am baffled right now. I have Experian’s CWP and I got a notification today that my credit limit with NFCU increased and it was marked as a FICO score change event. I went and checked and... 662 still.

What is baffling me so much about this is I crossed a clear scoring threshold - I was at 31.8% and went down to 17.2% on that single card.

My aggregate is 5.1% ($2639 out of $51750).

I have 4 cards reporting balances out of 8.

1) NFCU Plat - $2187/$12700

2) Disco IT - $21/$10500

3) BBVA - $376/$2000

4) PayPal Cashback - $55/$8000

BBVA and Disco will report $0 next month. I give up trying to manage the Sync PayPal card. They report it multiple times a month and never when it’s $0 so AZE2 is the best I can do til NFCU is paid off.

I don’t really understand how I didn’t get a lift for going under the 28.9% threshold. Any insight?

Re: Utilization dropped and no score change?

There have been many cases of people who have seen no score motion for one card going from (say) 17% to 34%, if their total utilization stayed vey low (1-8%) throughout -- even if all cards were at < 28.99% previously.  We simply do not know that these very low IU thresholds (e.g. 28.99%) have a scoring impact for every one of the 12 scorecards in FICO 8 when total util is kept otherwise low.

Now if a card went from 17% to 51% (with all other cards at a low IU) then I'd surprised if there was no score movement.

Re: Utilization dropped and no score change?

How totally frustrating!

Do these other scorecards tend to have a lower threshold or should I just put off my plans to pay large amounts of this card off every month and just spread it out to take advantage of the 12 months at 0%? If there is no scoring benefit, the $200 a month payment to hit 0 in 11 months would seem wise since I’m digging in the garden anyway.

I'm curious. What do you mean "it was marked as a FICO score change event"?

I find this odd because I also have EX credit works and have never received an alert from them of a limit increase even though I have had a few.

Re: Utilization dropped and no score change?

OP do you have any baddies on your file?
It is possible you are already optimizing score with low aggregate utilization and number of cards, all cards below 50% is part of that optimization. In other words the crossing 30% is not affecting your score, where you are now.
High Bal Jan 2009 $116k on $146k limits 80% Util.
Oct 2014 $46k on $127k 36% util EQ 722 TU 727 EX 727
April 2018 $18k on $344k 5% util EQ 806 TU 810 EX 812
Jan 2019 $7.6k on $360k EQ 832 TU 839 EX 831
March 2021 $33k on $312k EQ 796 TU 798 EX 801
May 2021 Paid all Installments and Mortgages, one new Mortgage EQ 761 TY 774 EX 777
April 2022 EQ=811 TU=807 EX=805 - TU VS 3.0 765

I do have my repo until July unless I ask for EE in April on EX and I’ll have it til at least June on EQ but everything except my BK is gone on TU so I might see a lift there?

BK falls from all three 8/2020 but I’m going to seek EE from TU and EX.

You don't get notifications or "alerts" for score-changing events, you get them for report changes.  Something indeed did change on your CR... your credit limit from the CLI.  That was the alertable event.  An alertable event does not have to coincide with a score change.  You are provided with a fresh FICO score at the time, but it doesn't mean that the alert had any impact on it at all, whether it changed or remained the same.

I get that, it just seems odd that Experian labels it as a FICO score alert in the email.

Do these other scorecards tend to have a lower threshold.....

Very little is known about how the algorithm varies between scorecards.

If you are gardening, then I wouldn't worry about my CC balances or credit scores.  It's not like you will be needing a higher score for something.
