#Justsaying
Very tough when someone posts a topic that might be related to say a certain CC, and then a mod will throw that new thread into an existing thread that is sometimes 1000s of posts long and can go back years. For instance, there is a thread for NFCU right now that if you want to find all the DPs going on for their cards, its 13000 messages long and goes back 6-years. And its not like you can go to a certain year, you have very limited ways to go thru the messages except for going to very beginning or very end, with a few choice in the middle.
Just saying there has to be a better way: maybe let new threads stand as they are, or compile only VERY similar threads together, or have a mod compile similar DPs and put them in the beginning, keep threads retricted to only calendar years, something. That is why similar questions are being asked all the time - very difficult to wade thru a thread that is that long or that old like I mentioned below.
Only bringing this up because I love this forum and I think it could be better and information easier to obtain if certain changes were made or considered.
What are your thoughts?

Mods here don't get paid. Collating threads and trying to sort them would be a significant undertaking and boring as all hell. If that were a job requirement of a mod we'd have few mods. I like having mods, especially when they're empowered to act as mods but don't have delusions of grandeur (which is the case on this site IMO).
The other factor is that when you have related data scattered all over the place it's almost impossible to reference and search for accurately and completely. Data is something I know a little bit about. The mods do a good job in thread consolidation and I wouldn't want to see significant changes.
In some cases it may be useful to close a large thread, open a new one, and link them together as it can in fact be difficult to search within these large threads for relevant historical information. I think the NFCU thread had about 4000 posts when I first started coming here and even then reading through it all was pretty painful.
As someone who has been both a forum administrator of his own forum and a mod on a few others, what you're asking for just makes more work for the mods. Mods are volunteers, not paid employees, and putting too much work on them can just cause them to step down or have them miss other things (this forum does a great job of getting rid of spammers and shutting down drama very quickly, for example). It's far less time consuming to have people use the search function or read the last 5 pages of a large thread.
Make no mistake, some people will still ask questions no matter how many threads there are with the same info. They won't even read what's been posted three threads down to see if someone already brought the same topic up. What you're asking for will just make more clutter IMO.
I do think that we should be locking threads after a year of posts though and have an archive section where people can go to read old DPs. The NFCU thread could use a big pruning for sure. It's my understanding it's already been pruned before.
ETA: I tap slow apparently and cf beat me but we made the same general points.

Now imagine 13000 posts scattered in 11000 threads.
Starting a new thread every time there is a question is not the answer.
Information becomes even more fragmented and harder to find.
There are only a handful of mega threads that do not deal with FOTM, and really, searching is not that hard.
A little effort is going to be required no matter how many threads are started.
If you wish a specific thread updated with current information, you're free to contact a member who started it.
If that member is no longer around, feel free to reach out to any moderator, unless you're suggesting @CreditCuriosity maintains them based on tags you used.
No one is prohibited from starting threads, but if the topic is already being discussed, it will get merged.
In terms of older, longer threads, member who started NFCU is active on forums. Have you reached out to them yet or is this your first step?

I do not mean to put more work on MODs, I hope I didn't come off as saying that. Just making suggestions to make things better.
I too was a MOD (well, back in the day on CompuServe (I'm dating myself now lol) used to be what they called an "Associate SysOp" i.e. MOD and didn't get paid and it was a forum with a lot of traffic like here (Video Games).
Just ideas to make things better (and @Anonymous you had a good one)

Now imagine that you have 13,000 posts discussing SoundBlaster or AdLib sound card settings to add to autoexec.bat in order to get sound in Wolfenstein 3D. Is it not easier to put those together when 80% of the posts are set blaster=a220 i5 d1 t4?

TBH, I didn't realize @CreditCuriosity was a MOD until today. I only added him and others because I have had many interactions with them.
Suggestion: How about locking LONG threads per calendar year. For example, the NFCU thread I mentioned above goes back to 2014 or '16 I believe. I doubt some of the points mentioned 6-years go still apply today. What do you think of that idea?
I am not trying to cause any issues with this thread - just ideas to make this forum better.

Fair enough. He didn't know he was in charge of updating original posts with data points until today. 😛
Most threads do get locked after a year. If nothing major has changed with a mega thread where many of the DPs have now become invalid (random concept: how to use your Membership Rewards points, and many of the posts are about Continental Airlines), there's no pressing need to break them up. The more recent DPs are on the most recent pages.
Wavester644 I can see what you mean. I've been on here a couple years and it can get a bit tedious when searching thru some mega-threads, but I also agree with what others have said above. The mods do a great job and pooling data would be a huge task. I do like the idea about closing them at a certain time, but even today we see folks reply to a very old thread and if it wasn't already closed, it is closed shortly after so people aren't referencing old data. Then we have the ones who jump in and ask just throw out a question with no effort of looking. Don't bother me much.
I think right now it has a good balance of what it's intended to offer and what we see. Once get things too organized, the the search engine becomes quite particular and for members who are just learning the site layout and credit terminology (took me a while to get all the acronyms), I think it would be harder for them to find what they are looking for since they'd need very particular words to find a match. I embrace the scatter, I like the thrill of the hunt, but I'm a different animal lol
Think everyone else summed it up pretty well. Use to be a Sys-op as well back during the dial-up days of BBS's, etc.. Once you get use to the site you can find alot of very valid DP's on topics you are searching for or with the use of google and term myfico after it likely to even yield better results, just takes a bit of getting use to, but i usually can find when i need fairly quickly and as others mentioned once you get use to terms and acronyms it even becomes more easy. We try out best as moderators to keeps things organized, but always open for suggestions if they make sense and are practical and not a huge bandwidth on our time as well
