Note, I do not know which ones? My geo is a long way away but, a bank in my area does not actually require a person to be their customer. I'd assume that a CU would require you be a member before applying. Not that it would really matter to most people, but if you don't have a deposit account with the co-branded FI your only cashback redemption option is for statement credits on the card. 100% do not need to be a member for an Elan card. And actually they offer a variety of redemption options. I am surprised as like @coldfusion I would have assumed membership is needed for any card from a CU. I have mine from a bank (well, now directly from Elan as the bank got bought) and as I had no deposit account, statement credit was the ony option. So what redemption options do you have as a non-member of a CU? If you want cashback deposited into a savings/checking account they will only process that into an account at the co-branding FI associated with the card, doesn't matter if its a CU or a bank. If you don't have a deposit account at the co-branding FI your available options are for cashback as statement credit, buy Visa gift cards at 75 cents on the dollar i.e. for example a $25 gift card costs $33 in rewards, make a donation to one of a small list of charities (Red Cross, United Way, etc.), or as a RTR if you're enrolled. These options are all managed through USBank/Elan.
