Making payment on 30th day

I forgot to make my payment on my car loan on time. I just made it on the 30th day past due. It was due on July 24th and today is August 23rd. Made it by phone on my debit card. This was with hughes federal credit union. I'm worried that they will report me 30 days late to credit bureau. I spoke to several people and everyone had a different answer. First person said if I make it today I won't be reported 30 days late to credit bureau. Others had different answers. Does anyone know if they will report?

Re: Making payment on 30th day

Including today, you're technically 31 days late, so yes there's a chance you could get dinged a 30 fay late.

I'm pretty sure I'm 30 days late today. I'm looking for a more definitive answer.

Real easy to use a date calculator... July 24 to August 23 is 31 days. As to a definitive answer, if you were in fact only at 30 days when you made the payment, the definitive answer would be they can't report it as a 30 day late until you're 31 days late. As to what Hughes will do in this situation I don't think anyone here can answer that with certainty. Maybe since you contacted them, and based on your history with them they'll give you one time courtesy and not report it. But I don't believe anyone aside from Hughes knows what they're going to do. Hope it goes in your favor.

I agree with the OP that the payment was 30 days late, not 31.

Since the payment was due Wednesday July 24, you start counting late days starting with Thursday, July 25.  You count all the way to and including Friday, August 23.  That's 30, not 31.

It's only 31 days if you include July 24th as the first late day, which it isn't.

So hopefully that bodes well for the OP.

Hughes told me I was only 30 days late. They also told me that they start reporting late on Day 31. I hope I'm good.

Re: Making payment on 30th day

Your 29 days late.  Actual calendar days don't figure into this.  A payment is considered 30 days late when the due date for the next payment arrives.

Your due date every month is the 24th, with that knowledge if your payment was due on 07/24/2024 and you made it on 08/23/2024 no credit reporting, however had you paid it on 08/24/24 then yes, it would report.  The vast majority of lenders do their reporting on the statement date.  Auto loan tend to do it on the due date first thing in the morning.  This bit of info is also why if your payment was due on 02/24/2023 and you paid it on 03/24/2023 (I'm staying away from skip year here) that you would be dinged for a 30 day late as you now have "2 payments" due which is the definition of a 30 day late.  Even though February only has 28 days March 24th is still 30 days.

Not including the due date of 7/24/2024 to 8/23/2024 is 30 days. ( I mistakenly included the due date above) However, if the lender has a cutoff time for payments set to 5:00 pm local time (which is the earliest allowed by law) and the payment was made after that cutoff time, it would be credited the next day and would be 31 days late, and could be reported as a 30 day late.

In the context of reporting late payments, they are calculated using calender days, not the next payment due date. According to federal law, a late payment can't be reported late until the 30th day has expired (lender cutoff time, or the calender changes to the next day) and has become 31 days past due from the original due date.

Using the example of 2/24/2023 to 3/24/2023 is 28 days. Based on the due date of 2/24, if a payment was made on 3/26, it's still at 30 days. If the payment was made on the 3/26 after the lender's cutoff time, or the 27th, then it would be 31 days late at that time.
