Ir probably would be a good idea to stay away from the forums and especially from the approvals section. Remind yourself that if you don't stop, you may eventually harm your credit by having your lenders take action against you for aggressive credit-seeking. I'm sure you would not want that to happen after the hard work you have done in building your credit.

I completely agree with this. I took a break from the forums for just this reason. I have no plans to apply for anything new at all this year. In fact, later this year I plan to close 3 or 4 accounts. Now that my credit file is in decent shape and I have more than enough cards, I find that I really have 2 or 3 'go to' cards. My spending behavior doesn't match the amount of cards in my profile.

In any case, I have no need for more cards and stepping away helped reduce the urge I had to apply. Now, I can hang out on the boards and not feel the need to apply for anything at all. I need to start working on those SP CLI's though!

Can't agree enough. When I joined the forum, I had 3 credit cards. Jumped up to 11 after becoming an active member here. Stopped visiting for a few months and just came back late last month. I found out about the Freedom Unlimited here and applied for it. Being here does something to you man. Get out while you can!

Lol...if anything I have to thank Credit Karma for making me hyper aware of AAOA being a factor (even if they don't display it 100% accurately). Just seeing that dip low scared me. I have applied for only 2 cards since joining the forums (at the same time) and havn't applied for anything since. That was over a year ago. Thanks to this forum I have built up the limits on my 3 major cards and 1 subprime card (Chevron >.<) to healthy levels. My scores are healthy and have weight to them. Some people use this forum to feed a gambling addiction. I use it to feed my "perfectionist" addiction. Which is peculiar because in no other aspect of my life do I consider myself as trying to be a perfectionist...just credit.

I am now mortgage shopping and feel comfortable that I don't have to worry about getting jipped on interest rates.

Thanks MyFico!

P.S. Don't leave, simply desire to have the best scores and the highest credit limits that you can get on your current cards

I quit drinking almost 25 years ago. Since I did all my drinking in bars and taverns, I haven't been in a bar or tavern since. Remove the temptation, in this case the forum, and it becomes much easier to resist the pull.

I'll drink to that. Smiley Wink

Re: Applying for Credit Cards Addiction

I totally understand. I'm going through this now. It's totally not about the cards, it's not about the money at all. It's about being approved. Actually as my credit score goes up, it's almost worse in a way because I keep getting approved for or think that I can get approved because I compare other people's credit scores to mine and they get approved.
I said the last two cards for 6 months we're going to be My 2 Ventures and then I apped for AMEX BCP the other night, then I decided I wanted Ebates. Now I'm saying no more cards for a minimum of 6 months unless Discover lets me in. The only way that I'll apply for Discover is if they send me a pre-approval or if the pre-approval has a more fixed interest rate. The thing is I keep changing my standards and saying this is the last one, two months later this is last one and so on. I'm $350 away from $50,000. Last year at this time I had $1450. Crazy how things change. I love the forums though and for that reason it's very difficult for me to stay off. I just want to focus on credit line increases and not applications my score just took a pretty big dip yesterday when all of my new accounts reported on one day. :- ( Good luck with your non-apping too!

Re: Applying for Credit Cards Addiction

The consensus may be to leave this forum for a while and that is a good idea, but I was different I read and read and read so much on this forum until I got tired of credit and didn't want to apply for a thing. I know I'm different but I became content with what I have and enjoyed the education I received everyday and used that to plan for future cards. So keep in mind your future and do what works best for you, good luck.

Re: Applying for Credit Cards Addiction

Oooooops. Just got approved for AmEx HHonors Surpass card. That makes my 9th AmEx card.

Thank you for all the advice. The one I have to go with is freezing my credit reports. I think that's the only way to actually stop. Freezing the reports will be like having a drinking addiction but not being able to get drunk anymore.

Re: Applying for Credit Cards Addiction

You apply for cards just to get approved? Sounds kind of crazy. I could see applying if you were churning travel rewards.

9th Amex cards?  Which ones do you have? I thought Amex had a limit on maximum number of cards one can have? Congrats on the approval by the way..

I've also heard about a limit on total number, but I've never had a problem. It's never instant. It always takes a few days.
