Re: Amex Prequal fail

No, only 1 point for every Dollar. If you plan to use Contractors etc. I would look for a card with the highest general spend, which seems to be Citi DC at 2%. Or the Cap1 Venture at 2X points. Amex can be hit or miss with independent Contractors, so i would suggest going with MC/Visa to be safe. However, if you want the most bank for your buck. You could apply for a card that has higher than normal promo earning rate.

With so many Credit products out there it really pays to do you research ahead of time, rather than just going for whatever you feel can get. If prospective A denies the n you can always go for the fallback.

Re: Amex Prequal fail

The main obstacles I seem to be running into at the moment are my old bankruptcy (9 yrs) and the number of hard pulls on my CR. I have been seeking credit lately, but most of them are a result of an auto refinance attempt a year ago. My CU generated about 20 HPs trying to find a willing financial institution. They ultimately failed, so I got a secured card 8 months ago to rebuild
and was finally able to refinance last month.

When I apply for big bank cards (Chase, BofA, etc.) I’m usually immediately turned down because of the BK7 or the HPs. Smaller/subprime lenders are more willing to issue cards, but generally want to give me a CL around $500. That’s nowhere near what I need. The $8k from AMEX was a welcome surprise, but as you say it’s hit or miss with contractors.

Any other suggestions?

you and i both got our amex bce cards at the same time, you'll probably be able to get preapproved for another amex in a few months. basically what you want to do is log into your amex account and then go to their pre-approval page and click the apply button. if you see a message saying "you are pre-approved" then you're good to go. if the message says "expanding membership is easy" then it means you should wait.

Thanks for the pointers, but I think I may be seeing something different, or maybe going to the wrong place. After logging in, if I go to the menu bar and select Cards/Personal Cards/Check for Pre-qualified Card Offers I get three results. None of them say "Pre-approved" or "Expanding membership...", but instead have a blue "Apply" button. How are you getting to the pre-approval page?

EDIT: OK, I get it now. If I click on the Apply Now button, I get the message about "Expanding...". Tried a few different cards at random (without going through the whole approval process) and got "Expanding..." on each one. It doesn't feel very expansive to me, lol.

@8bitmachinegun

Dows anyone know if this works for their business cards too? I have an Amex recently approved but I also want to get their BBP card. Thank you.
