I applied for BCU membership over the weekend and also a CC. I called to inquire why I was only offered a 5k limit on the CC when I applied. The rep was very nice and mentioned tha underwriting is only approving 5k for the members that join using the LifeMoneyYou subscripton are only being offered 5k until they build a relationship. She mentioned 90 days and some other activity such as deposits or other loan products. She suggested I apply for a personal loan as that would be evaluated different from the CC application. I assumed this from experience with other banks and CU's but I like to just let them tell me all I can about their process.
I know others have soured on BCU recently, but I don't intend to use them as my primary bank, just additional buffer. However, it was easy to reach customer service and they are quick to respond to me. Also 8% APR bonus interest on some money for a few months doesn't hurt.
I got ottered 5k on my auto approval email, but then got then to 20k after that. I'm wondering if that's a default amt until a human reviews.

when i called asking for a cli a few months ago, i was told $5k was the max unless i had "membership" options beyond the Life.Money.You. Aka the credit like was bucketed.
YMMV but that is what i was told.
I should have read this before I applied, even I just got approved only $5K and the same reason, after so many reconsiderations & back n forth emails, they said either CC/PLOC max at the moment they can offer is $5K for new members and can request CLI after 6M positive activity, I have 1% UT and have 791 FICO8 with no baddies, but I read lot of good reviews about BCU so I might consider accepting to build relationship for future use.

Addtl data point, I joined through the newsletter as well (live in California). Also approved for the $5k cash back VISA- good to know this is a cap based on membership type.
On the flip side, I believe the rep was correct that other products have differnt criteria. I applied for the Unsecured Home Line of Credit, asked for the max $50k, was countered at $25k (which I accepted) APR 10.25%. AMAZING rate for unsecured LOC (no lien on house or paperwork) just needed to submit a copy of recent mortgage statement. Showed up in my online banking same day I signed the docusign. Same HP as initial for CC.
Looking forward to building a deeprelationship with BCU. Also just opened a business account with them as well and just applied for a Biz CC
