I'd just gotten a Barclay Wyndham card a month ago, and there's no inquiries on my TU report since then so I figured I'd give it a shot before my new Amex and BoA accounts start reporting.
Got the unable to respond message. Checked on the app status page a minute later and it showed as declined.
I called recon and had a pleasant but short conversation. He told me I have lots of recent new accounts in the last 4 months. I couldn't really argue with that. He said it was a system denial and there was nothing he could do. I asked if there was an amount of time I should wait and maintain my accounts before trying again and he said he couldn't say. So I thanked him for his time and hung up.
Looking back, I think I can see what happened. When I got my Wyndham card, the cards I'd gotten approved for in the preceeding few weeks had reported yet (Citi TYP, Chase IHG) so my newest accounts were 3 months old, along with my most recent TU inquiry. Right now, the newest account and TU inquiry are 1 month old.
What do you guys think? Should I try recon again, or should I just chalk this up to hubris and try gardening until December?
I'd wait and do not push too hard. It is valid reason to deny someone who obtained so much credit recently.
So Doctor of Credit is reporting that Barclay has implemented a 5/24 or a 6/24 rule on the Arrival + that started in the begining of August. That might explain why I was approved and MrDisco was not. Feel lucky I got the Arrival Plus when I did.
Bummer. I was prepping for an Arrival+ app this fall. Not only does it appear the 50K bonus is going away any day, there are heaps of data points suggesting Barclays uses something akin to the 5/24 rule specifically for this card.

Barclay has put on brake on the Arrival + card. A lot people got declined. We were declined for this card, but approved with the Cash Forward card 5 minutes after. I figure they do not want to hand out the bonus....
After reading the Doctor of Credit post, my heart sank as I’ve been eying the Arrival Plus for a while. I’ve opened up six credit cards in the last 24 months, plus a charge card, so seven total. Of those cards, five of them have been opened in the last five months. I previously had the Arrival (no fee) card but in preparation for the Plus, I closed down the no-fee card on August 1, 2017. To maximize my chances, I was planning to apply for the Plus in November but upon learning the 50K bonus was going away, I decided to apply last night.
My application was instantly rejected. So I called reconsideration this morning and learned that there was no hard pull and that my app was denied because I already had "the same product." Barclays system considers the no-fee Arrival and the Arrival Plus to be the same card. The reconsideration rep said I could apply for the Plus since the no-fee Arrival had been closed but he’d need to do a hard pull. He did a hard pull, asked a few questions, such as why I had opened up other new cards recently, and then he approved my app!
So this is a different data point in regard to the suspected 5/24 rule. That said, the reconsideration rep was very friendly. I think I may have been lucky. My FICO score is only 667 right now, mostly because I'm carrying a large balance on a 0% interest card.
No sweat. There are many good other cards. I can still apply for AmEx SPG, PRG, business versions too. Also most of citi cards and Capital One cards. And the Bank America Premium card comes in October. Family members can apply for them too.

Probably because of people like me as I spent the 3k got my 550 dollar bonus and then got another 100 dollars making posts on travel site. So easy 650 dollars cash and haven't used card since.
I know there's no bonus for upgrading to the Arrival +, but i wonder how this will affect people who want to upgrade from no AF Arrival to Arrival +
In most cases it doesnt make sense, but if someone is planning a big trip and they want 2x/$1 for a whole year and can put a good amount of spending on the card, that would be ideal. One would have to spend $2,100/month to get 50,400 points...or just apply for another card with a bonus.
Just curious
