I applied for credit line increase from Capital One. Didn't really need it, but I was starting to use it more and figured it couldn't hurt. Anyway, I got denied. Then I remember three years ago, I got a $25 late fee because I was in Lebanon for work and their website doesn't work from there. They wouldn't waive it. So, anyway, I opted to cancel the card after the latest CLI denial.
In some ways, I get it. I'd really only used the card intermittenly and had just started to use it a lot more the past few months. But, on the other hand, my income is $80k a year, I have no debt besides a modest mortgage, and my credit score is 790.
I ultimately decided I'd just use my Discover It. Unlike Capital One, they gave me a high credit line ($20k) from the start.
I wonder with the economic downturn if credit card companies started to be a little stingy on CLIs.
I did the same to CapOne! Bye Felicia!
You'd think they would want to keep customers. Canceling the card was all automated. Even with light use, they were making $400 a year on me.
Capital One has been busy the last few months evaluating how well the spend on cards aligns with the credit limits and in many cases has been unilaterally decreasing limits when there is a recurring pattern of minimal usage on the card. There are number of data points here reporting CLI denials and toy CLI approvals ($100).
If your total spend this year on the card was $400 given the current climate it's unfortunately not much of a surprise that you were denied.
