I would not apply unless I was at least 0/6.

I would open the citi checking account with the current $300 bonus
it just needs two transfers from another bank totalling $1500 or more, doesn't need to be income from your job.
to improve my odds of approval, I would also try to apply after you get some money into that new checking account as well.
I would also check the citi pre-qualify tool: https://online.citi.com/US/ag/cards/pre-screen

All the previous comments are good advice to which I would add three more points: 1) I was not 0/6 when getting Simplicity, which (with Diamond) are the easiest Citi cards to get, but...2) I had a long banking history, DD, etc. 3) I would be more concerned they might not like the late marks.

I was avoiding opening an account. But given the $300 bonus, I might go that route. Thank you.

I have other cards planned out and I would like to go for them after Citi. Late marker may be a concern if they pull EQ in NY. TL has been removed from EX under the NYS law.
I think it is safe to wait until I am 0/6. Thank you.

Fingers crossed that they only pull EX. Although I've been denied a few times, they've only pulled EX for me each instance. I'm in NY as well.

Citi had pulled Experian for me too (AA Platinum Select from last August - Florida.)

Out of curiosity @NoMoreE46 does that have more to do with getting approved with a higher SL or with simply getting approved? (I had thought you meant 0/6 new credit card accounts - or did you mean inquiries?)
Best to be 0/6 for Inquiries. Applicants being 0/6 is not unreasonable for a conservative bank. (MOST Americans have less than four cards but we MFers are like three standard deviations from the Mean.)
Citi typically won't be giving > $10,000 SLs. CLI Requests are SP and if you apply too early, you will be provided your next eligible date...
Citi now provides eligible date for CLI - myFICO® Forums - 6774677
