tl;dr I want a high cash back card for sports ticket purchases. Capital One denied my Savor app for having too many cards open. Looking for options.
Background:
I have season tickets for a pro sports team. I have been paying for these using my HMBradley card for 3% back, but this is turning into 1.5% back next month, so I'm trying to find something better than 2% for this spend. The Capital One Savor looks perfect at 4% back for sports ticket purchases, and the annual fee is more than covered by the cash back with this spend.
I applied but was denied for having "too many active credit cards". The AAL listed a score of 787 from TU. At the time of application, I had 9 cards open, and I've only opened one card in the last 24 months. I'm trying to figure out what to do now. Seems my options are:
At this point I'm leaning towards option 1 since I haven't found any other good cards to open, and it seems like a big risk to close cards and get another hard pull just to get rejected again. Any advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated.
My open cards:
Don't feel too bad, plenty of people more than qualified enough to obtain Venture X cards get denied for that card by Cap1 as well.
Capital One seems to have a "customer type" and if you don't fit that (or they think you don't) they will deny you outright no matter the product.
Sorry you had to deal with that nonsense but you aren't the first and won't be the last. What really sucks is that they tend to pull your reports from all 3 bureaus instead of 1 or maybe 2 like other lenders which means you just made it less likely to qualify for another card with any other lender...Hard pulls are considered "credit seeking" even if you don't get anything from them afterall.
As for your question about which card...Season tickets for what sport? NFL, NBA, NHL or something else?
Your best bet since Cap1 denied you is to find a co-branded card for the specific sport or even team that you are getting the tickets for and seeing what is available rewards wise.
All CC issuers must select the reason(s) given for a denial from a vetted and standardized list of reasons. In many cases the reason given is not the actual reason but is only what the issuer felt at the time is the allowable reason that is the best fit for the real underlying reason.
"Too many cards" could for example align with something like "{total current debt load | total current unsecured credit extended} is appropriate for stated income".
I would not close cards with the thought that doing so would improve odds of approval.

My open cards:
- Fidelity Rewards Visa
- Wells Fargo Propel AmEx
- Wells Fargo Rewards Visa Signature
Wells Fargo Cash Wise(open at time of app, later had fraud on it and decided to close instead of replacing)- Capital One Quicksilver
- BECU Cash Back Visa
- HMBradley Mastercard
- FNBO Fordpass Visa
- AmEx Blue Cash Everyday
You should get this one. I have it.

Yeah, from what I've read here and elsewhere, Capital One is known for being rather inscrutable about its decisions. The season tickets are for an NHL team, the Seattle Kraken. Discover's NHL-branded card is just the regular Discover It with a team logo on it, and I can't find a Kraken-specific card.

There are a couple of versions of savor.
The savor one for good credit has easy underwriting and is easier to get.
It has no sub, no AF, 27 pct int, and 3 pct cb for dining and groceries etc

Somehow I overlooked that one and it turns out I was pre-approved for it. I applied and got the approval ($3000 SL, man these guys are stingy). Wish I could have got a SUB or even just the 4% without a SUB, but I guess Capital One needs to make their money somehow. Thank you for the tip!

Yes I agree, cap 1 can be miserly. When i first got my savor one i was putting 700 - 800 per month thru the card and paying in full each month and after 6 months my cli was 100.
