Denial Reason: Recent use of this account's existing credit line has been too low.

It appears there is a rule requiring an end-of-day utilization higher than some threshold between 44% and 66% within the last six months. I got this denial reason when my peak recent Util was 43%, but I did not get it when I had hit 66%.

There has been some question whether this rule requires a high balance to report on the statement. It does not. I received this denial reason when my most recent statement showed 31% utilization and my peak recent EOD Util was 43%. I did not receive this denial reason later in that same statement period, when my most recent statement utilization was still at 31% and my peak recent EOD Util was 68%.

I changed my mind. I really want to get the limit on this card up to a level that is somewhat close to my other cards, and that requires jumping on CLIs as aggressively as I can. I'm not confident anything I do will entice them to raise their offer at this time. Also, the testing I had in mind would have required me to accelerate some spending more than I'm comfortable with. So I requested a CLI again, got the same $400 offer (not surprising, nothing much changed) but this time I took it. I will post it in Approvals.

Regarding amounts, here is my best guess at their standard offers right now when they grant a cardholder's request for a CLI.

If your limit is thisYour likely CLI amount
$1600 or lower, not in Credit Steps $100
$1601 to $2500 $200
$2501 to $3500 $300
$3501 to $4500 $400
$4501 to $7000? $500
$7001? to $9000?$750
$9001? to $12,000$1000

I didn't get around to replying to your thread when it was fresh, @Curious_George2, but I have data points to contribute which might be helpful.    My Capital One Quicksilver started life as a Platinum card in 2009 with a paltry $1K limit.  Smiley Sad   I only got it when I was in the midst of juggling high balances and hoped to use it for a BT offer.  While my other cards weren't nearly at the level they are today, that $1K low limit was still well below my other cards and essentially useless to me.  I sock-drawered it for a couple of years, no BT and no swipes.   When the Quicksilver came out, I was able to product-change it and started to use it to try to grow it.  It was painfully slow.  But not as slow as the increases in your table above.  Without digging into old files, I believe my early increases back then were $1K at a time, so probably $1K > $2K > $3K.  Then they stepped up to $1.5K so I went from $3K > $4.5K > $6K > $7.5K > $9K.  I think it was around here it went to $3K increments.  While you can do this every six months, I don't think I knew that per se or tracked it on a calendar.    After a very long time,  I finally grew it to my goal of $25K in March 2020!

Unfortunately, while I was doing this, my Quicksilver was slowly becoming more and more obsolete in my wallet.  By the time I got it to $25K, I had begun to assemble my current list of several 2% or above options. (Now I've got AOD FCU, BofA PR, PenFed PCR, and GS/Apple which all earn 2% or more plus the Chase Quadfecta with my CSR which lets my CFU bump up earnings from 1.5% to 2.25% or more.  So I have five cards that earn more on general spend.)

The Denial Reason above is the one I usually saw when I was declined.  Funny, but I thought your 44% to 66% of CL was a high estimate.  But when I ran the numbers between my last couple  of increases on the linked data ($19K>$22K and $22K>$25K), I came up with about 46% on each one!  However, I don't think the six-months is a factor as much as how much of the limit you've spent since the last increase.   The figures in my list show when I was using the card more on a routine basis, so the charges were more organic since 1.5% on my QS and CFU were my best uncategorized cash-back rates at the time.   But right before I tried for an increase, I usually pumped up the spend and started hitting the CLI request button until it passed.  On the last one, I even processed a $4.6K BT Offer and immediately paid it off, which seemed to help meet the spending threshold.  Obviously, like the GS Bank/Apple card, when you're looking at spending as it is  related to credit limit, the higher your limit means the more you have to spend to get an increase.  So my current 2% plus options combined with reaching my $25K goal and the high spend I would need to continue the trend were the reasons I decided that enough was enough.   Now, I'm looking at the possibility that I'll need to put spend on the card or resign myself to closing it or letting Capital One close it.   But it's served its' purpose and I'd be okay with that.  It's one of a few cards that I really no longer need and my limits on other cards have risen enough to easily fill any void it leaves.

Hope this helps your Capital One data analysis efforts!

You're welcome and glad to help out!   Some of my experience is from many years ago so policies may have changed.  Also the amount of CLIs may vary based on overall profile and whether the card started out at "bucketed."  (It appears mine was not.)  If that 45% to 46% figure turns out to be the magic spend number, Capital One may actually be stingier than Goldman Sachs on the Apple card, where about 25% to 30% of spend against the credit limit seems to yield an increase.

Re: How to get a CLI from Capital One

I don't know if any of my DPs will help, but here's what I got.

Cabela's (Capital One) MC:

SL $500 Oct 2015
^ $600 Aug 2020 - requested (after many denials through the years)

^ $700 Jan 2021 - requested

Capital One Platinum/Quicksilver:
SL $300 Nov 2015

^ $400 Jun 2017

^ $1400 Feb 2018

^ $2400 Sep 2018

^ $3400 Apr 2019

^ $4400 Nov 2019

^ $4850 Aug 2020 - requested

^ $5350 Jan 2021 - requested

[The CLIs not marked "requested" are those that I don't remember if I requested them or not. Most of them I did not.]

Cabela's card spending for the last year+

Dec 2019 $361

Jan 2020 $1229

Feb 2020 $1600

Mar 2020 $1114

Apr 2020 $761

May 2020 $1052

Jun 2020 $1442

Jul 2020 $1292

Aug 2020 $397

Sep 2020 $736

Oct 2020 $565

Nov 2020 $711

Dec 2020 $861

Jan 2021 $14 (I got other rewards cards.)

This spending is probably typical for the life of the card. Keep in mind this was a $500 card for most of this time. I was usually paying it off every two weeks when I got paid. Trying to keep my spend at $10k+ per year so I'd get 3% back at Cabela's. But I only recently started paying attention to the balance on the statement date. Looking back, I'm at 80-100% on the statement date more often than not. That probably worried them too much to give me a CLI. I thought the heavy spend would convince them I needed a bigger card but that obviously didn't work. NEVER missed a payment.

Platinum/Quicksilver spending for the last year+

Dec 2019 $1789

Jan 2020 $2526

Feb 2020 $67

Mar 2020 $516

Apr 2020 $329

May 2020 $503

Jun 2020 $1361

Jul 2020 $419

Aug 2020 $1389

Sep 2020 $3553 (Bought a $4k transmission for my pickup. $3200 of that went on this card.)

Oct 2020 $217

Nov 2020 $213

Dec 2020 $119 (Upgraded to QS)

Jan 2021 $62

This card was typically only used when the Cabela's card was maxed out.

EDIT: If I go look up what my statement balance was each month, that would probably be more helpful than the actual spend for each statement cycle, but this is something I had handy in a spreadsheet.

Something might have changed at Capital One. In the past two weeks, and particularly the last two days, we have seen a lot more reports of generous auto-CLIs than normal. If my records are correct, here are the number of auto-CLIs of $1000 or more, reported in the Approvals forum, by month:

  • Aug. 2020:  0
  • Sep. 2020:  0
  • Oct. 2020:  1
  • Nov. 2020:  1
  • Dec. 2020:  2
  • Jan. 2021:  1
  • Feb. 2021:  6 (In the first 12 days of the month.) EDIT WITH UPDATE:  7 through 14 days

That's very encouraging! But we haven't seen any evidence yet that they have changed the amount they give to cardholders who request a CLI. I think we have only heard about one of those this month. It was a $100 special, but with such a small sample, it's inconclusive. It would be great if they ditched the 10%/$100 framework and made the table above obsolete, but we can't say they have done so yet. (EDIT WITH UPDATE: As of 2/15, we have two $100 on-request CLIs this month.)

Re: How to get a CLI from Capital One

Exciting news: @LawStudentCivilis posted in the Approvals forum that CapOne gave that member a $1500 CLI, on request, to a card that had a $5300 limit. That is three times higher than what my chart would have predicted.

It is a Savor card, and my sense is that sometimes those and Ventures get different treatment than Platinums and Quicksilvers, so some more DPs will be needed before I'm comfortable saying I'm confident the 10%/$100 chart is obsolete for all of us. But this is new

and different and very encouraging.

Re: How to get a CLI from Capital One

I just received the $100 special from Cap1. The CC had just turned a year old on Feb 12th.

I know it's bucketed though, it's starting SL was only 300. So after a year it is now a 600 SL.

Congrats on getting something from them and thanks for the DP. Sorry if the amount isn't what you were hoping for. It's nice to see you've got much more comfortable limits with Navy.

Thank you for the great detail!

QS, 18 years, 5 months $6500. I couldn't remember the last increase, somewhere in my excel spreadsheet , SL $250 (regular Capitol One to Platinum to QS). Was deny again last week for CLI. The last year CLI attempt was also denied, just like years before that. Current balance $1100. Was ~$1800 3 months ago, then ~$1300 2 months ago, $1200 last month, when credit report was updated and now $1100. I thought that would take that into consideration and approved me but they didn't.  Will pay it off at end of Mar.

QS, 13 years 10 months $8450, (Increased $2000 few years ago, when they were still generous from $6450). SL $500? (Platinum to QS). Denied ever since every year. I didn't request for CLI this time since I know it is going to be another deny. Last month 2100. Current balance is now $1700. Will pay it off on end of Mar.

Venture, 13 years 10 months $5400. I couldn't remember the last increase, somewhere in my excel spreadsheet or old credit reports, SL $750 or $1500 I couldn't remember. Denied last year. Will not apply for CLI this year. Current balance is $1200.

Was ~$4000 2 months Jan, then ~$1500 early Feb when credit report was updated and now $1200 (today). I thought that would take that into consideration and approved me but the other Cap1 card is being denied so I will not apply CLI anymore.  Will pay it off at end of Mar.

I will pay everything down to 10% or 11% utilization on overall cc acounts and try again.

Re: How to get a CLI from Capital One

I now believe the 10%/$100 era is over... sort of. Today we heard the second report this month of a CapOne card getting customer-initiated CLI of $1500, when my table above would have predicted something like $500 - $750. (First. Second.) That's the good news.

The bad news is that some cards are still getting $100 CLIs. That happened to CLs $750, $300 (maybe credit steps?), and $500 (just a few posts up in this thread). It's early and the DPs are few, but it kinda looks like maybe 20-30% is the new normal. That is still stingier than many issuers, but it's an improvement if it holds up.

Another intriguing mini-pattern appears in the two $1500 CLI cases: neither member reports the super-high spend that we are accustomed to seeing CapOne demand. More research is needed to determine if there's a new rule there.
