Re: Official Credit Unions Guide

Disregard. I did the same thing the peeps in the other threads did. I didn't click further. You are right Irish. Looks like you need to be a member for a cc. That may not be the case for their other loan products though. They don't have the same verbiage as the credit cards do.

Re: Official Credit Unions Guide

To shed some light as a former employee of two different credit unions (NFCU was one), I was told that we were required to take the application, regardless of whether the person was a member. Then underwriting would also put as a condition that the applicant become a member prior to the product being disbursed. This usually is not widely discussed and they do not have to take your application online. How it worked at my past CUs was that you either had to physically mail in a paper application explaining the product you wanted and why, or you could call the contact center. I would not reccomend going this route unless you were rebuilding and didn't want to join unless they would approve your card. I also believe that underwriting would be more cautious of your application if you did not want to become a member prior to their decision.

Never heard of that CU humu. Is it open membership?

It is open as long as you donate $20 to the Texas Longhorns organization, I checked with them. No need to be a resident of Texas.

It originally was for university employees and their families, but has been expanded to include anyone who donates the $20.

So humu, you don't have to join at all if you just want the cc. 😉

You do have to have an active checking account according to what it says when you go to apply

Yes, I would think one has to be a member to apply for products with pretty much any credit union. I think the person who stated otherwise in the thread was mistaken.

Just to be clear, the way you become eligible is by donating $20 to the Texas Longhorns association. I'm not sure why the other poster said you didn't actually need to be a member, (see their comment below), because you do.

Re: UFCU $0 BT and 5.9% APR [ New ]

Turns out you do not have to be a member to apply for a credit card. I applied on Tuesday. Got a call from a loan officer today. I was declined for "too many new accounts". I tried to attempt a recon based on my rebuilding and trying to replace a few of my high interest cards with lower interest cards. No dice. I don't know which version they use but they pulled EXP. My Fico 8 according to CCT right now is 673.

Re: Official Credit Unions Guide

That's the thread I saw humu. That's why I thought you didn't have to be a member to app the cc. But, I will join nonetheless. I need to garden awhile first though. Looks like they are new acounts sensitive. And I have a ton! 😂

Here's the page to the download link to donate $20 to Longhorn Foundation for those interested. Especially Irish who is an undercover Longhorns fan! 😆

Re: Official Credit Unions Guide

Ok any DCU members out there? I finally got my online access. But, when I try to enroll in free fico score it says unavailable. There are conflicting reports out there regarding this. Is savings and checking enough to qualify or nah?

I tried to join UNFCU and USSFCU recently , but due to Chex systems, could not succeed. Eventhough I do not have anything negative on Chex systems, I had more than 4 inquiries in the last 90 days on it. So this was a show stopper for me as I joined few local CUs in MN and have CCs with them.

Hence if you plan to join CUs, plan ahead and make sure Chex systems will not have more than 4 inquiries in the last 90 days ( after 90 days, they cease to impact).

Also as for as credit cards concerned, with some CUs we can apply for credit cards eventhough we are not members at the time of application. But once approved, membership is mandatory ( I encountered this with local CUs recently).

@jfriend from what I have read, LMCU is extremely difficult to get an approval with. They are like ultra conservative. If anyone else has had a different experience please chime in.

Getting any of the LMCU credit/loan products is quiet difficult. I have savings and Max checking with them ( opened in 2014). I tried their credit cards couple of times ( even though I had my TU  hovering around 750), I was rejected once for geogrpahic reasons ( they were taking applications only from Michigan and Florida residents), another time for excessive credit ( same reason NASA also gives!!).

Well that eliminates them off my 2017 list! HA!

Thanks for the Chex inqs info on USSFCU and UNFCU. That's valuable info. That's why I love threads like this! 😄

And that's what I thought with DCU. But when I tried to enroll it said not available. I will try again later.
