@OmarGB9 wrote:Yea so with low 600 scores and with the current economic climate, I'd have advised starting off with the secured card (which is what I did, since my scores aren't much better than yours). Got approved for that, funded with $500, and at 91/3 I applied and got approved for a $1k MoreRewards Amex. Now I'm just waiting for the secured card to graduate, hopefully within the next few months.
By the way, never trust Navy's pre-qualify tool; it is useless and prequalifies everyone for EVERY card, which is obviously inaccurate.
@OmarGB9 ya im starting to see others saying that about Navy Prequal now too. Thank you for the advice. Id like to just go ahead and do the Secured card, but not going to try it now if I would get another hard pull so ill wait a few months
For what it's worth, I had initially applied for a cash rewards card and got denied, but then I tried for the secured card immediately afterwards and got approved for it with no additional HP. YMMV.

@OmarGB9 ya thanks. It would make sence they would use the same one. I couldnt see them doing a new HP a day apart. But if I go and do it without waiting for them to confirm that, I just know what would happen haha.. So im no russhing. I shouldnt of been in a hurry in the first place. Gotta at least learn from my own lessons i guess. Thanks though Omar! Youve been a big help
I applied for a Flagship shortly after joining NFCU and was rejected. I applied for a MoreRewards card shortly after that and was approved ...for a $1,000 CL. I don't remember the precise dates or timing, but at that time, I had quite a few cards at or over $10K including a $20K Amex, and scores in the mid-700s. That said, my profile was weird (still is), so the only reason I was surprised was that this board creates the idea that NFCU is very easygoing about approvals. They may be in many cases, but if you look, there are a lot of surprise rejections and surprise low CLs. I think relationship really is a major factor in their case.
I feel your pain
@Anonymous wrote:I couldn't help myself... I got a Navy Federal bank account yesterday... So by nightfall I was wanting to apply for a CC through them. 11pm I did the prequalification and the prequaled me for every card. So I decided to start towards "the bottom" of the list and I apply for the Platinum card. I apply and get the message we will process and let you know in 24 to 48 hours... Well got my alert for Transunion pull at about 1am then just before 2am I got an email stating "After careful consideration, we are unable to approve your application.
You will receive a letter in the next 7-10 business days with details explaining the decision.".... Ya so I obviously start beating myself up good for even applying and getting a hard pull for nothing... uugggg... Now does that mean I hadnt even qualified for the Secured card? Cause if I did wouldnt they have said we couldnt get you the platinum but you can get the secured card?
Rejection is sooooooooooooooooooooo hard lol
Those 3 words "After careful consideration.... always start the process of that sick feeling in your stomach and instant regret.
Hopefully in time you will accomplish your goal.
p.s. I would have squinted my eyes and thought something was a little off if the prequal had applied to every card offered unless I knew without a doubt my profile was exceptional.

I think your mistake here was going for the Flagship right away. It's well documented that one has slightly tougher UW requirements and thus is much harder to be approved for as a first card.

I agree! Same thing happened to my DH when he became a member - had to wait it out for at least a couple of months (which he decided was best anyway since he was on a credit rebuild). Once he got some activity on his accounts between mine and his and some time had passed, he finally got approved for the Platinum w/an SL of $1400. Not the greatest but considering how his credit had taken a beating for a couple of years, he was very happy!
OP, not sure what your credit profile looks like but give it some time, work on your CRs. Working on credit is never as fast as we would like it to be - you'll get there.
It's fun to read post's like this. I started with navy in September with secured card. Started with a 1,000 then another 1,000 then another 1000. So 3k limit so far. I use the card for everything. Spent around 4K on it last month. I made 7 payments to it last month as well. Well they wouldn't except anymore payments though checking, I think it was my 5 th payment, so I just moved money to savings then to the card😎. So in 3 1/2 months I've made around 20 payments. Between 300.00 and a 1000 each time. Have DD with navy too. 7500 a month. Anyone banking with navy federal must master fico 9. Learn every little trick. Aka, collections. In September before I got the secured card I was around 600 score, now up around 750-760. Just waiting for trans union to delete a collection I paid in full. The collection company tried to get me to pay 50% of cable bill. They even emailed me to settle for half. But I knew better, to pay in full because I just opened an account with navy, an with the help from everyone on here I learned about fico9 , and how to play the credit game. I think I'll just keep adding to the secured card, I believe it's 5k limit. This week the collection should be deleted, it has from eq, an ex. My trans union should be 760-770 fico 9. Really want that black card.😜😜
