Re: WHAT CREDIT CARD SHOULD I GET?

So I just called the number on my card and if I went to freedom or freedom unlimited I would forfeit the bonus AND the intro 0% APR.

If this is the case, is there any benefit to changing to either of these cards?

Yes. The goal is to be able to accumulate UR points, and then use CSP or CSR to redeem them for the highest redemption value. So, hopefully you'll get approved for the CSP and then you can accumulate points on either Freedom at 1.5% with FU or 5% Freedom bonus categories, where neither the CSP or CSR can get you those points. Basically anything that's not travel or restaurant related.

Your Slate doesn't earn anything.

Re: WHAT CREDIT CARD SHOULD I GET?

Thank you guys so much for all of your advice but now I'm confused.

The sapphire is only good for rewards on travel and restaurants?

Am I doing myself a disservice by only looking at Chase credit cards and not looking at other banks?

Over the next month or 2 I will be spending Over 10k on things for the house and remodeling materials...

I really want to capitalize as much as I can with the rewards

Re: WHAT CREDIT CARD SHOULD I GET?

Look up "Chase Trifecta" on YouTube. Basically the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve is the centerpiece of this strategy. The Freedom (5% back on rotating quarterly categories) and Freedom Unlimited (1.5% back on all purchases) cards earn cash back. With one of those Sapphire cards, you can redeem the Freedom cash back as UR points, so 5% becomes 5x UR points and 1.5% becomes 1.5x UR points. The categories on the Sapphire cards are travel and dining, but by having one or both Freedom cards you effectively expand your UR earning categories accordingly.

You do want to apply for the Sapphire Preferred or Reserve directly to ensure you get the sign up bonus. PCing your Slate to a Sapphire will miss the bonus. If I were you I'd get either one of those - the CSR has a minimum $10k limit while the CSP has a minimum $5k limit, but you can request a $10k limit for the CSP. Then get the Freedom - if you apply for both on the same day, at least online, they will only do 1 hard pull for both applications (apply for the Sapphire first) and Chase only starts to get stingy with limits once your total credit limits with them is about half of your annual income.

I'd apply for the either Sapphire and the Freedom, then once you're done with the 0% on the Slate, PC the Slate to a Freedom Unlimited.

If you want another 0% card with rewards, put in for the Discover It after you get the Chase cards.

The main reason to go for Chase first is the 5/24 rule. Once you have those 3 Chase cards, you might consider an Ink card if you do have a business (makes a "Chase Quadfecta") or the United, Southwest, or Marriott cards. To my knowledge those are the only cards affected by 5/24.

Re: WHAT CREDIT CARD SHOULD I GET?

My 0% is done now so if i apply for both cards tomorrow can/should I call and do the pc same day?

Also Once you get the cards is it as simple as just using the card that has the highest benefit for that Particular purchase?

Re: WHAT CREDIT CARD SHOULD I GET?

When I got my CSP it wasn't an instant approval I had to wait like 7-10 days before I found out I was approved.

You can do a PC whenever you want, although I guess in the interest of not rocking the boat it's probably best to not do it until you got the approval on the other 2 cards.

And yes it's as simple as using the proper card for the proper purchase. The Freedom and Discover It cards require you to "activate" the 5% categories which is as simple as logging into online banking and clicking a couple of buttons, I think putting in your billing zip code too. But you only have to do that once per quarter.

This quarter the Freedom has gas and mobile pay (like Android Pay and Apple Pay). So if get gas, use the Freedom. If you're at a restaurant, use the sapphire. If you can use mobile pay at a given store, ensure you have one of those applicable apps set up with your Freedom as the source and use that. Otherwise, bust out the Freedom Unlimited for 1.5%. so yeah, it's basically that simple.

Just remember that when your points accumulate they accumulate on each card account, but in the Ultimate Rewards portal you can transfer points from one card to another - so you'd transfer all the Freedom points to the Sapphire. But you only need to do that when you're going to redeem the points.

Re: WHAT CREDIT CARD SHOULD I GET?

Thanks for all of the help!

One last thing. My wife and I share accounts.

Can she refer me to apply for the CSR or CSP and get the rewards?

Does she already have the CSR or CSP? I don't think you mentioned that before.

She can refer you if she has either card in her name, otherwise, how would she?

Re: WHAT CREDIT CARD SHOULD I GET?

OK so I applied and was approved for the Saphire preffered (24k) and when I went to apply for the freedom I was re-directed to a landing page thanking me for my interest.

I just applied about 5 minutes ago and want to get the other card today since its only one inquiry.

Please help

Call the backdoor number and speak with an analyst. Try 888-270-2127 or 888-609-7805.  I haven't called in a while, so I hope they're still active numbers. Find out the reasons for the denial and come up with a rebuttal.

It may be just as simple as verifying it's you applying for the card. Some times applying more than once can trigger a fraud alert.

If they say that's the maximum exposure they can offer you at the moment, then ask if they can move some of your other credit lines to get the approval. For the regular Freedom, you don't need a large CL. The 5% bonus categories max out at $1,500 per quarter, so anything over that only gets 1%. Only offer to move your credit lines as last resort. You want to get them to approve you without having to lose any CLs first.

I hope everything works out. Let us know how it all goes!

Re: WHAT CREDIT CARD SHOULD I GET?

As long as you put the app in on the same day for the second card, you don't need to get the result back the same day - it'll still be one hard pull. I applied for the CSP and within about 5 minutes applied for the Chase Amazon card, and didn't get a decision back on either one for about a week. It was still only 1 hard pull.

Edit: to above poster: was he denied? Kinda sounded to me like the app is in a pending status, but maybe I misunderstood. OP, if the app submitted and didn't give you a final result, it should just be processing. Otherwise it kinda sounds like it just glitched on you in some way and didn't let you submit it at all - in which case just reload the browser and try again lol.
