Are they looking for only millionaires with perfect 850 scores? Jesus H. Christ! They recently denied me AGAIN! I got denied from them last year about this time too. I have only had three denials in my life and two of them are these guys. The other is CITI Best Buy, who a year later came to their senses and approved me. Look, I am not the absolute richest man in town, but I'm far from a scrub. My income is near six figures and my credit scores are all good to excellent, in the 740-780 range. My payment history is perfect. I have always paid my bills on time and there is absolutely no reason for anyone to think I won't continue to do so for the rest of my life. I am good with money and my history proves it. I like cash back and this card offer 5% in some categories no one else does so I really want it but they keep shutting me down. It pisses me off...the nerve of those people! After their refusal, I got approved for a Synchrony BP Visa at 5K and responded to a mailer for a Synchrony MC that gives 2% on all purchase and got that one too...7K limit! Why does Synchony, Chase, CITI, Bank of America, Capital One, etc. etc. always say yes while US Bank says hell to the no? I can think of just one possibility...I called the woman on the phone the b-word and also used the f-word and s-word when she said they'd be no recon for me a year ago and perhaps they took my name and blacklisted me!

Well...I can think of several other reasons. US Bank is very much a relationship bank...if you open a depository account, the Gold Checking package is free, they will likely approve you for credit products.

They say you attract more flies with honey than vinegar...but, I digress.
It's understandable you may be upset, but denials are part of life. It sounds like there was something in your profile that the USB algortihm's didn't like. That said, what were the reasons for your declined application, was it related to inquiries, new accounts, or both? If so, how many of those were present for the past 6-12 months?
Good food for thought Maize and Blue. I have a Synchrony High-yield Savings account and they seem all too eager to give me credit. I also have a Discover checking account and they recently raised my limit to 18K unasked on my It card. I have a checking and Way2Save account with Wells Fargo and they approved me for two credit cards. So maybe the answer is to open a checking account with US Bank and just send about $25- $50 weekly to it like I do the Discover one. I might do that, they reapply for that card in about 6 months or so.
Well last year FinStar they said multiple inquiries in the past six months. But I didn't have but one of those this time. Still waiting for their little love letter in the mail...I know it will tell me more but I also wanted to vent here and see what people had to say.

That savings account didn't help me one bit. I tried going for the Amazon Store Card & PayPal 2% MC and both were denied on different months. I also doubt Synchrony cares that much of a bank account seeing how it's all in the ALG.

It's all profile-driven so it can be a mixture of either or both (and the timeframe for either) based on what other members have reported. Certainly a depository relationship *could* help, but it's not 100% guaranteed since the denominator will still hinge on the number of new accounts or recent inquiries (or other factors) for a variety of profiles. Hopefully the letter may reveal more information. Some applications can be sent back to UW for a second review/reconsideration while others are locked and won't have that option.
Since you recently scored 2 new approvals, you may want to space the next application with them though.

So US Bank declined me twice this year as well. First for the same inquiries (and new accounts) in 6 months. Waited and tried again and was told too many in 12. They changed their UW this summer to look at a year.
I get the frustration but unfortunately they know they have an excellent card and they know everyone wants it, and that means they can be choosier with who gets it. If you want it, wait til you are at 1/12 or 0/12 would be my suggestion.
Opening a checking or savings with them couldn't hurt but I wouldn't look at it as a guarantee that they'll ease up on the inquiries/new accounts rule - many DPs of long term US Bank customers with high scores getting declined as well.
A relationship isn't necessary, except with Altitude Reserve, many of us have got US Bank cards without a prior relationship. Could it help? Possibly, but hopefully some clues will be in the letter. Hopefully not mentioning insulting staff!
