I notice my pre-approved loan offer dropped by $5k when I requested this CLI, so perhaps pre-approvals on loans is some sort of barometer for how much more Amex is willing to extend in credit

Congrats on the CLI!  The loan pre-approval is interesting.  I've been semi-regularly seeing a loan pre-approval for the last 2 or 3 months ($15k @ ~17%, but still think I'll get a CLI denial with my BK still on file.

I agree on your AMEX loan barometer idea - I have similar experience with that.

And as soon as you are approved for high AMEX CLs, you will probably never be pre-approved for an AMEX loan again.

It does not matter if you are carrying a balance or not.

I think the primary idea of the AMEX loan is to transfer balances from AMEX cards.
