Discover CLI at 90% UTL

Hello everyone

creating this topic as a way to give back to this community that has helped me rebuild my credit. Also to pass on information thst may help others.

started my rebuild at 540 scores. Used to have 830 scores across the board but opened up a business that tanked and was left with lots of debt. Car got repoed etc. it's been 6 years that I've been rebuilding and finally getting some traction.

got a discover secured 2 years ago. Graduated on its 7th statement to a discover chrome with $500 credit line. 6 months later bumped to $750. I spent every month asking for cli and always denied. Yesterday I requested and got bumped to an additional $650.

my utl was 90%. Scores are 670 accross the board.

credit karma shows the discover it 5% cash back as a suggested card based on my credit profile. Should I pull the trigger to upgrade to the 5% cash back card. Seems to be a better card and probably has more room for better cli and luv from discover compared to the chrome card I have?

thank you everyone

Re: Discover CLI at 90% UTL

Congrats on your CLI!!! Have you carried high utilization long? More than one card with high utilization? I'd wait to apply! Just until you lower utilization!!

Dont pay attention to CK recommendations!! Purely marketing!! Are those CK scores? You want FICO scores. That's what most lenders will use.

Thanks for your reply!

I've carried that utl on that card for just a month. Those scores are Fico scores.

Re: Discover CLI at 90% UTL

First let me say I am happy for you that things are turning around, I know what it feels like to have scores over 800 and ever thing going great then it goes down bust do to medical reasons, but things do work out in the end. I have scores over 800 again, if I can do it then any on the board could do it to. If you are paying off your discover card each month don't worry about UTL on your credit report as long as your making more then the minimum payment, Discover will see that. You might want to call Discover and ask to speak to the credit operations and go over your situation before you apply new account with Discover they are great company to work with. Good luck.

Re: Discover CLI at 90% UTL

Thank you sir fir the motivation and advice. Takes a lot to stay positive after having scores in the 800's.

bought a house when I was 21. Had it all going for me. Everything tanked for me and I went from being approved anywhere to being denied for everything.

I tried calling discover to see if there is any more wiggle room for the cli but they said no. So I'll pay off the balance to report a better utl in January.

before applying for their discover it, I should call them?

experian is showing the Walmart rewards master card. Is that any good?

There are dp's around here recently of the Cap1 sl's for their Walmart card.  Search those before app'ing with their 3 hp's.  Also, my ds and dil got nice cli's with Ms. Disco last year with cards pretty much maxed out, auto cli's.  Those cards are their one and only...Ms. Disco likes that apparently.

As far as doing a second app for another card with Ms. Disco do a search here again to see those sl's on members second card.  My dp was a second card (IT) which was $1k less than the first card (chrome).  I was disappointed and that happened Nov 2019 before this Covid-19 mess.  I don't know your cr's and I'm not saying you'd do good, so so, or approved but I think researching on here might help you to decide if and when to pull the trigger.

Good Luck with all and Congrats  on finding your way out of that hole a lot of us know all too well. Smiley WinkSmiley Tongue
