[Update: Approved] Newbie Capital One Quicksilver question

I've been searching and reading the boards for the last several days and haven't quite found an answer yet.   When Capital One Quicksilver says they require Excellent credit - is that a done deal?  Should I even bother applying?  I do not want the Quicksilver One card with the annual fee!!  My main goal is a cash back Visa logo card (which I plan to pay off every month and report a low utilization) with no fees and I'd love the bonus cash back that they are offering because with my monthly bills, that will hit the mark.  Also, do I request a certain CL and if so, what should I ask for?  Oh, and the pre qualify doesn't work for me on anything as I believe I opted out to prescreened offers a long time ago.

Some info...I have a 5 year old BK and have established credit since - current balances are Barclay/now Mercury MC ($25/$2500), Kohl's ($0/$600), JCP ($0/3200), and a small auto loan ($2400).  I am an AU on 2 accounts for my Mom due to being her POA (they are also low utilization).  Cap1 was IIB for $3k.  I pulled my credit check total #s Fri and they were Experian 695, Transunion 683, Equifax 693.  Although, before joining and unknowing they would automatically deny due to BK, I tried applying for a Chase card and their denial letter said my score was 704.   Is it worth it to go for the Quicksilver card with those numbers?  I don't want to waste another HP but it seems like they are very forgiving from what I read here.   More insight would be much appreciated before I pull the trigger.

Re: Newbie Capital One Quicksilver question

It would be a hard pull on all three bureaus with Capital One, but honestly it sounds like you wouldn't have a problem being approved.  CapOne is very forgiving and everything that you described tells me that you are their target audience.  You will not be able to ask for a specific credit line when applying; they'll give you whatever their computer thinks you should have.

There's no such thing as a guarantee in the credit world, but even though CapOne for some reason doesn't like me much if I were in your shoes I'd have little hesitation on applying.  Worst case you end up with a denial and a wasted HP on each bureau.  The affect that has on most credit scores is grossly overrated.  Best of luck and thanks for providing so much information with your post!

Edit: If you need a little more courage, feel free to do a search in the Credit Card Approvals subforum (or you could just click this link since I'm feeling especially helpful today) to compare others with similar profiles.

Thank you so much!  That makes me feel better.  I guess I'll give it a shot.

Wow, thank you for that help too.  I'm glad you're feeling generous today.  I try and be diligent about searching before asking so as not to be one of those redundant, annoying people.  Ha!

BTW, I went ahead and applied and, as you assumed, I was approved and they gave me a $10k limit.  I was shocked by that.  I can't imagine ever even coming close to touching that amount, but it's nice to see.  As a side note which I didn't even think of, I use Capital One 360 (opened back when it was ING) for various savings hide-a-way accounts (Sinking Funds) and it just had me connect my card to that login.  Makes it nice.  Whew!  I can relax now.  I've been a little OCD about this for a while.  Time for coffee....

Did you try the pre-qual to see what they offer?

IMHO, you might get pre-qual for better cards than Cap One. You've done this much research on the forums, might be wise to see which issuer would pre-qual you besides Cap One.

Cap One also triple HPs. If your goal it to get in with Chase (within the next 24 months), you might want to be thinking of your inquires, too.

Awesome!  I am so glad this worked out so well for you.  Congratulations and I am going to move this over to Credit Card Approvals for you.

Congrats!

Cap One can be very generous.

Use it, pay it, grow it.

Rebuild started in 2014  -  $100k unsecured credit in 2017  -  $500k unsecured credit in 2024.

Congrats to you!  For not being sure how it would work out, you sure did get a great SL.  That will do wonders for your utilization as you continue to expand in the future.
